It really messed up my MBR!
I lost that file in the confusion, then made a fresh bootable usb on the same stick, so I don't have anything to investigate! Maybe that's just as well though!

This was the worst part, wiping all 3 disks:

Tip #1 . Always disconnect all other hard drives when installing/upgrading/messing around with an OS on a separate drive.

In my case, I switch the harddrives off or pull out the hd trays.

Glad to hear that you've recovered, but sorry to hear that you had to lose everything!

I didn't lose anything personal, that's all on external hard drives but now I face the daunting task of re-installing programs.
The worst one is the recording studio program. I may leave it as I don't use it much anymore.
It was an exciting day yesterday! Everything is back to normal now, (almost!) *Smile

  6. I thought I was the only person having fun with re-installing
I don't believe 10 plays well with other partitions or disks for that matter :/
Good news is possibly a consumer preview might be coming soon doubt it will make much difference though ?

Knock on wood! So far I haven't had any problems with 2 OS drives on my computer. 8.1.1 is installed on a SSD and 10 is installed on a HDD with 2 partitions. I'm actually excited about the possibility of 10 going consumer preview in January. We're getting closer and closer to the final release.

Tried that too, but came back with: "unable to find disk with proper image", or something like that.
I should've taken screenshots of all the malarkey but I was too busy freakin out! *Wink
I never have really trusted native windows system images (perhaps without merit) and have always stuck to 3rd party disk/partition imagers (i.e., Acronis, Macrium, etc.). I also create rotating images (system_win7_1, system_win7_2...). The same goes for my important non-system partitions (data, Apps, etc.).

On my home computer, I have a similar dual boot system running very smoothly so far. At my computer club, I have Win10 on a SSD (no dual boot). About a week after installing 9879 (when booting) my desktop screen flashed on and off. Could not shut down normally, nor use Ctrl-Alt-Del. Decided not to try any fixes except to do a clean install. Its been running about 2 weeks now without any issues except for KB3020114 which I was able to solve.

  10. Question: How are we supposed to learn here if no details at all are given about a problem, yet a post is made saying "I don't want to discuss it?

There is no reason to be embarrassed about any kind of mistake. These are how we learn. Nobody who's staying here long will bully anyone about mistakes. We should learn to laugh off mistakes. I told someone to make a Repair disk the other day, not knowing there hasn't been one since Win8.

What I remember in the early days of Win7 is that we tore into every problem that came up with the enthusiasm of astronauts, and out of this came the top tech forums in web history. I'm hoping we can see that take hold here soon. The mechanics of the system have yet to be explored beyond just getting the latest build installed.

Rich I hear that ! Knock on wood. Installed a new ssd drive on my everyday number 1 pc. I just got to give 10 a try on my best. Got all going good. Next day wham no lights come on. No start up no post. You got to be kidding me. Unplug from the wall. Switch out the power supply. Yahoo lights camera action. Back in the saddle again.*Cool

  12. A quick google of "Embedded Lockdown Manager" indicates that it is part of Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry? Was that the "custom ISO" you referred to? If you reinstalled with media downloaded with the Media Creation Tool, I would think that that shouldn't be there any more?

That showed up on the fresh install from the 'Media Creation Tool' download, (after cleaning up from my 'train wreck'!) *Wink
It's not un-installable either, I'd have to delete the .exe!

  14. Not my experience. Win8.1 is doing fine on its own SDD, but Win10TP, on a different SSD, is getting file system corruptions several times a week. This is an SSD that I used on Windows 8 before I upgraded it to 8.1, so I know its good. That said, the chkdsks have tapered off and so far this week, everything seems to be OK.

I've read lots of threads and comments about 9789 trashing disks (although I've been having filesystem corruption problems all along), so I'm hoping that MS does something significant to address this with the CP.

    Good point.
However, I got myself into hot water due to my own carelessness so I didn't think it appropriate to discuss it in detail nor did I feel like it at the time!
I'll do better next time. *Smile
