Windows 10: How can I activate Windows 10 without losing data?

I have an old Toshiba Satellite. It came with Win 7 activated, I decided to upgrade every computer I have to Win 10. The upgrade went smooth on one, but two couldn't update for whatever reason. My computer reverted to Win7 but didn't activate. So, I decided to do a clean installation. Now, I have Win10 NOT Activated. It worked on my son's computer but not mine. Is there any way to activate it without moving data files around or just losing it all? I really don't want to lose anything. My external drive went out on me and I had to retrieve all the files I could from it. So, everything is now on

I won't buy a key, stupid.

I'll revert back to windows 7 then.

When I still was on windows 7, about a year ago I added 4GB extra ram which is a total of 8GB now,
is that causing the problem?
