DX12 Downgrading

So Im trying to play Fortnite on mt PC...I have DX12...It requires DX11...The game doesn't support DX12 features...So I spoke with Someone from Microsoft support and told me a way to do it is resulting in wiping my whole PC...but i don't want to wipe it........CAN
SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the game is only DX11, then even if you have a DX12 GPU (video card), and a DX12 OS (Windows 10), the game will only run is DX11 as that the mode the game was designed to run in. In order to run in DX12 mode you need 3 things....

• Game must be a DX12 title
• GPU must be DX12 capable
• OS must support DX12

If any of those things at missing, the game will run in the lowest DX mode available to the lowest item. In your case it appears the game is only DX11 capable, so your DX mode will be 11. Also be aware that the DX API is backwards compatible, which means DX12 can play older DX games - 8 - 11 for example. That even though the OS is DX12 capable, doesn't mean a DX9 title is automatically elevated to DX12.

Either a lazy, or uninformed, poorly trained 'support' person who is not involved in gaming. Not uncommon unfortunately.

- First - The game is a current release, so there is no need to select an older version of Windows in Compatibility.

Doing so could be counterproductive.

- While you should enable Legacy Components & Direct Play as suggested, this
only applies to old games.

New games do not require Direct Play.

There is no such thing as 'downgrading' DirectX. Win10 is capable of using DX9,10,11... Yes, and DX12 too.

And there is no such thing as a Default DirectX
. The only relation to Windows is Win10 is the first Windows to also use DX12.

Games use DirectX libraries ( .dll files), and it is the game that decides which version, or sub-verison of DX it requires,

not Windows, and not the user.

DirectX is composed of numerous files. All of them function independently of each other.

- Does your graphics processor support DX11 ? What brand and model graphics card ?

- If you have not already done so run the - DirectX Web Installer - to verify all DX files are installed.

The following is a list of the DirectX .dll's you will have when the files are up to date.

- Go to the Windows / System 32 folder, (and SysWOW64 if you have 64bit).

They are in alphabetical order and will start with d3dx9 - 24 > 43 . Then d3dx10 - 33 > 43 & finally d3dx11 - 42 > 43.

There should also be - d3d9, d3d10 and d3d11 (among others). These come before the D3Dcompilers-33>43+47.

- Win10 currently has only two d3d12 files. One in System 32,and SysWOW64 .

- There are more DX files, but these are most of the graphics related Direct X .dll's

- When you post back give some details of what is, or is not happening, along with your graphics processor specs.

Or, you may do better posting on a dedicated Fortnite forum. A lot of people seem to be having issues with the game,

so there are probably fixes for problems peculiar to the game.
