  2. sfc /scannow found corrupt files but cannot repair some of them/1709 build

What are the steps that you can't follow? There are detailed instructions on how to restore and repair corrupted files from the link that we've given.

Go to the section "How to view details of the System File Checker process" and
"How to manually replace a corrupted system file with a known good copy of the file".

If there are corrupted files, we would like to know what are the findings of your scan? Can you send us a screenshot?

Updating your Windows software protects you from malware and malicious attacks, often includes feature enhancements and security updates. You can check and manually update your computer if there
are cumulative updates that were not installed yet. To do this, perform the following steps below:

    • Make sure that you are connected to the Internet.
    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • Click Update & security.
    • Click Check for updates.
    • Wait and let your computer download the Windows Update.

To know more about the specifics of the Windows Update History, you can visit this

    link
    for more information.

In addition, we would like to recommend visiting this link link:
Use the System File Checker tool
to repair missing or corrupted system files
. There are instructions on how to restore or replace corrupted files with a good known copy from this link. Go to the section
"How to view details of the System File Checker process" and
"How to manually replace a corrupted system file with a known good copy of the file".

Follow the step by step process there and you will know what files you need to recover from the
    sfcdetails.txt log.

Let us know if you successfully performed these steps.

How can I repair or replace these two log files? (found by scannow)

Hi, how does it do this?
    - that's a file you find via e.g. file explorer and examine.

Suggest you check your disk: download and run Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) and post a screenshot of its GUI.
To post a screenshot please use the Insert Image icon above your post to the left of the video icon. Thanks.

    If ok, then
From an admin command or powershell prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
    chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:

Samsung SSD report from Hard Disk Sentinel (now uninstalled)

Sorry, apparently since this "pre-owned" EliteBook came with German Windows, even though I have the English pack installed, the report is in German, but I think the results are clear: approx. translation >

"SSD is PERFECT, no problematic or weak sectors found, optimal performance activated, no action required"

Dunno if this is relevant, but apparently the nice man who installed the SSD (upgrade) in my HP 840 G2 put in one from Samsung (I checked specs for HP 840 SSDs and they run from ca. 300+GB to 500 and 512GB). Must say that until recently, after I tried to get Spotlight to work again (messing with Registry to no avail) and System Refresh, this machine worked super, and still does until and only except the lock-ups which started last week.

    partial translation from Event Viewer:

EnglishVerification of the safety descriptions ended. 72479 Data files processed. CHKDSK reviews USN journal ... 41870368 USN bytes processed. The review of the USN Journal has been completed. Errors in volume bitmap are corrected. Corrections to the file system have been made. No further action is required. The data carrier check has been completed. Please wait until the computer has restarted.

.... but scannow still gives same "cannot repair member file" msg

Please post the results of the chkdsk /f

Compared to most computer manufacturer's HP computers typically come with on board hardware diagnostic tests. They are located in the bios and will check: Motherboard, RAM, HD, CPU, GPU, etc.

On the HP web site open software and drivers HP Software and Driver Downloads for HP Printers, Laptops, Desktops and More | HP® Customer Support
and enter the computer's serial or product number and the operating system. View available applications and drivers. Install the latest UEFI diagnostics or see if you can use this link to download version 6.4: HP PC Hardware Diagnostics | HP® Official Site
Once the UEFI diagnostics are updated perform the following steps:
    1) power on the computer repetitively clicking the F2 or F10 key
    2) when in the bios navigate to the UEFI diagnostics
    3) in the evening run the extensive or loop until failure mode.
    4) it generally takes 4 to 6 hours to run 1 loop and it depends on the size of the drive and the amount of RAM.
    5) the testing is designed to abort if there is a failure. So even a bad battery aborts the testing. When you view the computer in the morning if the loop until failure is still working that is a good sign. Then click the keyboard escape key and confirm the pass result in the UEFI logs. If there was a failure it will display a failure code.

If more rigorous hardware testing is needed that can be done but you already should have HP baseline study results with the overnight testing.

Once you have ruled out any hardware problems you can attempt to fix the software problems with the following steps:

    1) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    2) dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth
    3) dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
    4) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    5) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread
    6) find a flash drive that you can format
    7) create a bootable windows 10 iso: Download Windows 10

Finally repaired the missing log issue with cmd/admin DISM repairhealth, checked with scannow

Sincerely doubt that the underlying problem of occasional freezes/lockups will stop until MS fixes 1703

1.First of all: when these freezes happen the ENTIRE machine freezes, except the keyboard functions (the caps lock will toggle, the keyboard will light when touched).

    2. I already posted as much of the above requested as I could > the results are in German which I barely understand

    3. The "nice man" (from Turkey and quite savvy as to how to get around MS protocols etc., small store and him now disappeared with NO recourse now available for me) did a number of unorthodox things including first putting into this "pre-owned" HEWLETT PACKARD/HP EliteBook a Toshiba spinning drive (incorrectly plugged in, loose), then installing a Samsung SSD (which I have tested as "PERFECT", with 500GB cap., at top end of correct max size range for this PC). He did NOT give me a disc or license and when I told him I did not want smtg illegal, he claimed it was. And the computer acts as if it is. However, it is WinX Pro and although I am THE Admin, since I now found out I do not have certain Security Admin privileges allowing me to check or modify certain things, I can guess he used some kind of network trick to install WinX.

    4. So it is not clear if the problems are specific to this unit OR generic, since I now see that such freezes (total lockup of everything user-interfaced in WinX) are not uncommon with WinX or v. 1703.

    5. I have NO current way of generating ANY income, even this used computer took a big toll on my diminishing savings, and I do not want to further stress the machine by running it all night!! (it is my ONLY possible way of finding work, etc.).

    6. After turning on the MSDTC (now automatic & running) and re-installing updated drivers and software, the machine makes less and less "I am working" musical 3 - 4 note sounds. My first guess as to what was involved in initiating the lockups was the amount of time and use the PC had in that session is now refined into how much load was put on the CPU. That is, how many things were running. That fits with my general idea that the lockups (entire PC) were first caused when I went from Firefox 86x to 64x (it's a 64-bit machine & WinX) .... and that I somehow made the machine "go too fast" for itself and it "tripped up". I later found the Firefox uses a LOT of memory, and switched back to Firefox 86x, which is more than fast enough.

    7. If the problem of freezing now remains only occasional (no more than once every few hours at most, with the easy "out" of on/off switch stop & re-boot into seemingly perfect operation), given that it seems that such total freezing is NOT uncommon with WinX and v. 1703, I will accept it "as is" for now. But if it becomes more serious again, a not-cheating "up & up" small store can install a definitely legal not-cheating WinX Home for ca. $100, the accepted price here outside of USA (I don't need the networking features of Pro, nor MOST of WinX features for that matter). However I will STILL expect some problems and difficulties with MS as "going with the territory".

So I apologize for NOT further complying with the above requests and posted my last response ONLY in regard to those CBS files .... which I read should NOT be user messed with, and although scannow could not repair them, DISM health repair did (and the machine seems smoother than before anyway)

Thanks to all for understanding *Smile

    addendum to above:

All still working VERY smoothly now (few Windows "I'm working" sounds) and I can guess close to the "normal" rate of WinX / 1703 mess-ups (interactions with itself, the hardware, drivers and other software like Kaspersky, Firefox (I trust its privacy a lot more than Chrome, which I keep as a backup), Classic Shell, Ransomfree, HP Support Assistant, et al.

Of course I know how complex is the entire set of programs with millions of lines of code .... but in line with my guess of over-working, confusing and tripping-up the CPU, etc., I have had to REGULARLY turn off -- again & again after every other boot-up or so -- various WinX functions that I neither need nor want! Such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other unneeded and unwanted functions which put loads on the system. I use Huawei Mobile Partner going through a cellular network at max. maybe 3,000 kbps and though a bit slow at peak-usage times at maybe 50% of that is still more than fast enough for my needs, even for large downloads.

  12. Hi Airider, Win10 comes with its own antivirus software built-in (Windows Defender).
To lighten the load on your computer, you can uninstall Kasperky, reboot, and activate Defender.
Click the widows icon in the lower left corner and type: Defender. Click on Widows Defender and activate it.
    Hope this helps.

The general consensus after expert testing is that Kaspersky is at or next to the top and Defender at or near the bottom w.r.t. effectiveness. Check it out for yourself.

I will NEVER use a computer on the Internet without Kaspersky.

You can do what you want, but I strongly advise all others to check with the experts before trusting Defender as their sole reliable and highly effective anti-virus defense (of course Kaspersky does more than just anti-virus)

I have Defender make automatic periodic scans only :*Smile
