  1. How can I stop Windows prompting me to set up a security key?

Sometimes, when I sign into a website using Microsoft Edge, I'm prompted to set up a security key. This is a new behaviour since "updating" to v130.0.2849.56.I don't want to set up a security key, and I can't find any way to turn off these irritating prompts. So far only seen with Edge.

How to stop windows 8.1 upgrade prompt

Because at the time I made my first post I didn't know this article existed. Your post made me interested in figuring out exactly how hard it really was to disable the prompt. This article was the first google link I clicked on...

Actually it tells you how to do it via group policy as well. Also, I wouldn't put modifying one key in the registry above the user expertise of the common user on this forum. But if that is too hard there are plenty of google results that walk the user through it step by step or just provide the registry file for you so it is a simple double click and your done. My point was that Microsoft isn't exactly making the information to get rid of the prompt a secret, if they were as evil as you say, they would have made it impossible to disable.

I've got my facts right. Maybe you should check your facts before getting snarky with me again.

  3. Administrator security settings keep changing

    Hi Anthony,

Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community.

I do appreciate your efforts and time.

What error message do you get when you try to save and sync files?

I suggest you to try the steps below and check if it helps.

    • Open command prompt and type the commands below (Type it in Search or Press Windows Logo Key+X. Click on Command Prompt admin).
    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

    sfc /scannow

    powershell

    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers |Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like "*SystemApps*"} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

    • Close the Command Prompt window.
    Try these steps as well.

    • Open the properties of the main user profile folder where the files are located (such as Documents, Pictures, etc).
    • Go to the Security tab and click Advanced.
    • Check the box at the bottom of this window. It is labeled "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" and then click Ok.
Hope this helps in resolving the issue. If the issue persists, do get back to us. We will be happy to assist you.

  4. How can I stop Windows prompting me to set up a security key?

Security settings and Personal Vault require a security key, except none is set up

    Hello Steffan,

Good to see you in Microsoft Community.

Were you referring to the fact that you were prompted for a physical security key when you visit your Microsoft account security page in your browser?

    • Could you please send me a screenshot/photo of it in the next reply?
    • Was there any other authentication methods (e.g. email, phone, etc.) on the interface? If there is, you can try them.
If you can successfully verify your identity using other verification methods, you can turn off two-step verification in your Microsoft account, wait for a while, and then turn the feature back on again (as you need). Visit Turning two-step verification on or off for your Microsoft account - Microsoft Support for more details.

If you can't verify your identity, I suggest you try to recover your Microsoft account. Visit Help with the Microsoft account recovery form(microsoft.com) for more details. Theoretically, Microsoft accounts with two-step verification turned on cannot be retrieved through the recovery form, but depending on your actual situation, this is the only last possible solution, otherwise the account will not be available.

If anything is unclear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Best Regards,

    | Microsoft Community Support Specialist
