Windows 10: How can I upgrade to a Windows Insider build that might not necessarily be the *latest*?

TL;DR - How I can make my computer be on Win 10 Insider build 18945, coming from either 18362 or 18950.


So, I've been playing with Windows Subsystem Linux (WSL) for a little bit now, and recently read about WSL 2 so I had to check it out. The way to install the new version is by upgrading to a Windows Insider build. I was on build number 18362.267 , and I read that I needed to be on at least build number 18917 or higher. No big deal. I just went to the Windows settings and set up to get the "Fast" track for the newest preview builds. This put me on build number 18950.


At this point I thought all was good, and went on to mess with WSL to get version 2. After a few failed attempts, I ended up just deleting all my distros, and redownloaded from the store. Set distro version to 2 and everything. But I just could not get into a shell. There seems to be a bug in this build that makes WSL essentially unusable. My problem appears to be the same as mentioned here: https://github.com/microsoft/WSL/issues/4371so at least they are aware of it.


Anyways, back to my main question point. Someone in that github issue mentioned downgrading to build number 18945, but I just cannot find how to upgrade/downgrade to a specific build number. None of the Slow/Fast/etc insider paths seem to provide the updates I need when checking and rebooting and all that jazz. Am I just missing something obvious here?

Windows 10 RTM/Build 10240 now available for Insiders

use the key you need for the build and run those lines in cmd to activate

I suggest running those commands as administrator. Just in case.

Not able to upgrade to the latest build: Windows Insider preview.

The reason you are not able to upgrade the insider build to latest is that you might have skipped some builds (as you have not updated it from last 3 months) as such it is greyed out. You can download the build manually and
then perform In-place upgrade.

setup file and follow the on-screen prompts.



If you want to stop using Windows 10 Insider Preview and return to your previous version of Windows, you'll need to reinstall your previous version from the recovery or installation media that came with your PC—typically a

Lost activation after upgrading to latest Insider preview build: 0xC004C003 error

Try reinstall Windows 10 Pro 1511, make sure it is activated, then join the Windows 10 Insider Preview again.
