How do I boot into DOS?

    Hello

How do I create a DOS bootable memory stick?

    Progress so far:
I had downloaded RUFUS (v2.12), and got it to format my Kingson memory stick. I even got it to "Check device for bad blocks" and I un-ticked "Quick format". I ticked "Create a bootable disk using" and selected "FreeDOS".

I then Clicked on "Safely remover hardware and Eject medio" and plugged the memory stick into a new computer. Then during boot on this computer I hit F2 and changed the boot sequence so that the memory stick is at the top of the list and hit F10 to "Save and exit".
HOWEVER when I reboot on this computer it goes straight into Windows 10 and fails to boot into DOS.

I have tried doing the same thing on a second memory stick, but it has the same result - it fails to boot into DOS. I even tried doing the same thing on a different computer, but still I can't get it to boot into DOS.

    What am I doing wrong?

    J

    :)

safe mode windows 10 how do i boot into it

Most simple way is to hold the Shift key while selecting Restart.

That will take you to the Repair Environment.

TroubleShoot / Advanced Options / Startup Settings ... which will give you the startup menu.

UEFI BIOS? If yes you will need to turn off Secure Boot.

You cannot because it has not existed since XP. The repair option is very limited and not used for stuff that you need to use the proper tools or safe mode to fix.

How do I boot into DOS?

He still cannot get into any DOS and it will only mount Linux with limited abilities. He also needs to know how to use Linux also. This problem that he has been dealing with is one that we have tried and given every solution out there, but they continue to want to experiment which is fine, but it will not help for whatever reason why.

  9. Ok, you know something I don't know. From your reply, it looked like you only read the thread title, not his actual post. Now I know the rest of the story. *Wink

I think you are correct. He just read the thread title.

Conversely I downloaded FreeDOS and put it on a USB using Rufus as described. The main thing (which Rufus does) is writing the mbr.

It would NOT boot on my BIOS based PC but would boot on my EUFI PC. That wasn't the results I expected (the opposite in fact) but there we are. You can.

It has nothing to do with XP or Linux as Bro67 seems to think (where did that come from?).

Either your system will boot your USB or it won't. In my case Lenovo BIOS will not. My EFI one will. It sees the track one as something to run and so it does.

I genuinely don't understand what you are talking about. I am only semi-technical but am trying my best here...!

For the record, yes I did manage to boot into FreeDOS. I was under the impression that given that it was failing to run from the Windows 10 command prompt that I needed DOS in order to run Samsung's Magician software.

It turns out that Magician needed 32 bit, and not 64 bit Windows command prompt. So I created a new Windows 10 Recovery drive on my memory stick, this time using 32 bit Windows.

I managed to run Samsung's Magician, however, although it can see that I have another drive, it is still failing to read the SSD.

It seems I need some sort of driver from Samsung (if not an SSD driver then a "storage controller driver" - whatever that is!). I spoke to Microsoft 2nd level of support and they thought it would have to come from Samsung not Intel. However my problem is that Samsung are refusing to help, I think because the SSD not the original 128GB SSD that came with my PC but was a 512GB SSD which even though it was also made by Samsung, they are washing their hands of it, saying that only the "system manufacturer" (who is that if not Samsung?!) can help.

What also does not help is that Samsung does not appear to offer any downloads at all for my laptop - a Samsung Series 7 Ultra Notebook - (model NP740U3E-S04UK) that I bought in 2013.

    Conclusion:
I think I need a storage controller from Samsung(??) but I have no idea how to find it.

It's starting to look like my 512GB SSD may possibly be faulty, but all I'll say is that it was certainly working (albeit corruptions happened) right up to the moment when I tried to re-install Windows 10!

    Any suggestions?

  15. DOS and FreeDos. Hyper-V is really good for running OLD software. I haven't tried "Win98", but I think it will work.
