Windows 10: how do i change my internal username on windows 10?

i use the same microsoft account as the rest of my family, as it's more convenient to have everyone's stuff all stored in the one place. i'm using a surface pro with a single user (myself) connected to said microsoft account. whenever anything on my computer needs to fill in the username for any reason, it uses 'harty' (an account nickname that my dad has been using since before i was born). my username for my pc's account is my own name, and i'd like to change the internal username to reflect this.

i very quickly found the 'users' folder in my C drive, which contained two read-only files, one named 'public' and the other, sure enough, named 'harty'. should i turn off read-only, rename the file to my own name, and then make it read-only again, or will that not fix the problem/cause issues? if this isn't the solution, what is the safest and easiest way to change this internal username?

Are you logged in with the Microsoft account or a local account?

You can follow the steps below to change the username and check if it helps.

• Press Windows key + X key.
• Click on Control Panel.
• Under view, select large icons.
• Go to User Account.
• Click on Manage another account.
• Select the User Account for which you want to select the password.
• Click on Change the username.
• Click on Change Name button.
