Windows 10: How do I display 1080p on my TV from a 720p laptop?

For context, I have a Lenovo Thinkpad with a 720p screen and I recently bought a Haier LE39F32800 TV. Usually when I connect my laptop to a 1080p monitor, it works perfectly as long as I set it to only display on the second monitor. However, my new TV only displays in 720p despite being a 1080p TV. When I try to change the resolution in Display Settings, the option is greyed out. I know the problem is with Windows/my computer and not the TV because I have tried connecting the TV to my desktop and it outputs in 1080p as it should, but not with my laptop. My graphics card driver is on the latest

1080p on 720p tv

I just bought a vizio 32in tv as a replacement for my monitor (E320i-A0 | VIZIO).
At walmart it was tagged as 1080p. i got home plugged it into my pc via hdmi cable and it displayed 720p. I went into settings and selected 1080x1920 which it is currently showing and running on.

I looked up online and vizio doesnt have a 1080p 32in led smart tv. but my tv is still able to show 1080 even if it were the 720p model.

When i say it is able to display 1080p, i dont mean up on the corner it shows 1080p, the screen gets alot smaller in 1080 than in 720. and my games also show 1080p select able.

 

720P still outputs 1080P

Tried that in Extended Desktop mode. I set both display 1 and display to to 720. But the video tester confirmed the actual HDMI output was still 1080p.

I tried in Duplicate (mirror) mode ( 1|2) and even though the screen said 720p the actual output was 1080p.

Gave up as show time was approaching and used the Neo 1 tester as a format conversion device.

I realize the first matrix connected to this laptop was capable of 1080, but some of the other upstream equipment is not. When a user "requests" 720p the graphics system needs to respect that regardless of what HDMI thinks might be best.

You probably have a "virtual" 1080p, where part of the image is actually not showing on the screen. Specs for the monitor are "Native resolution 1366 x 768"
