How do I forcefully change the active signal resolution?

I recently got a new laptop and it only has an HDMI port and my monitor is only VGA because it's fairly old. So I had to buy an adapter to be able to use my monitor. My monitor is natively 1280x1024 so I switched the resolution to that. But what I received was an "out of range" message which I know means that the monitor does not support the resolution I set it to. So I checked again and it said 1280x1024 so I was confused. Then I realized that the active signal resolution was set at 1920x1080 which is my laptop's native display resolution.

As you can see here, the monitor is set to 1280x1024 but my laptop is outputting 1920x1080.

To make things even more bizarre, I set it to 1280x720 and it worked!! Why the ****?

Now if someone can tell me how to forcefully change the active signal resolution going to my monitor to 1280x1024 that'd be great.. microsoft just keeps outdoing themselves every update lol

    :)

  2. desktop resolution and active signal resolution

I have my desktop resolution set at 1280 x 1024, which is what I want,

but the active signal resolution is set at 1920 x 1080.

Where can I change the active signal resolution to 1280 x 1024?

I have tried going to "display adapter properties" and list all modes,

but this only lets me change the desktop resolution.

desktop resolution and active signal resolution

    Hi MayonAccounting,

it is normal if you change from the recommended resolution.

Typically, your desktop resolution and your active signal resolution will be identical. To provide a smoother experience, Windows prefers to keep your display running at its native signal resolution. If you change your display resolution under Settings > System
    > Display > Scale and layout > Resolution, you may see a difference between your desktop resolution and your active signal resolution.

is there a problem with what you see on the monitor?
