How do I get a Digital License with a self built OEM install?

    Hey everyone,

    I am a bit confused.
Earlier this year I totally rebuilt two PCs with win 10 ( downloaded from Microsoft site where you had choice of ISO or bootable flash drive.

I had two legitimate OEM keys too.
Both display digital entitlement where I can put in a new HD reinstall, not enter key and voila reactivated.

Now, several months later, two other PCs, same install DVD, 2 new OEM keys but it says Windows is activated, not Digital entitlement or Digital license.

I tried swapping out a drive to see if it would auto activate, I did not enter a key and it did not auto activate.

What am I doing wrong? How do I reach the state which I desire which is to be able to swap a HD and auto activate.?

Is a win DVD generic until a key (oem, MAK or retail is entered)?

Does this have something to do with the cut off this past July?

    Thanks so much!

    :)

  2. Swap HDD between PCs with Win10

    Hi,

I just bought a ASUG G20 gaming PC that comes with a 1TB HDD and a OEM Win10 installed with a digital key. I have a custom built Win10 PC with a 500GB SSD and a Win10 digital license (from a Win8 upgrade) linked to my account.

Can I from a Win10 license point-of-view simply swap the HDD over and expect the licenses to function correctly?

My worry is that the OEM license will not work on my custom built PC and that I cannot swap the licenses "around" - any suggestions on how this functions?

    Regards

    Jeppe

How do I transfer a digital license to a new PC

the old computer did not come with windows 7. I installed windows 7 after purchasing it, and then later took the free upgrade that Microsoft was offering.

How do I get a Digital License with a self built OEM install?

You are conventionally product key activated and for versions 10240 and 10586, you did not get a digital licence, so you need to enter product key to activate, However, it seems it may have changed with AU version ie you get a digital licence even if product key activated.

    Bit confused here.

Install 6 months ago and today's install used the same media, Valid OEM Keys and both running 10586

One has digital entitlement (license) one simply says activated.

Doesn't OEM allow me to swap hard drives all I want and reinstall windows a gazillion times or is the difference that I have to reinstall OEM prod key in a "NON' digital entitlement(license) environment? whereas with the digital license I would not have to?

Can't be sure how the same build can show different licensing details... that is weird (post a screen-shot)

OEM licences have a very low activation count (i.e. tolerance for hardware changes) do not mess with that...

  7. Windows 10 OEM keys? Obtained from where? Latest ISO of the current build or older ISO from an earlier build?

How do I get a Digital License with a self built OEM install?

I would have thought the reverse is true in that OEM license would allow more tolerance.

However with a digital license isn't it all the same now regardless of retail or oem key?

Why would you think that? OEM's purchase these keys for a song from MS, no way they will be equitable with retail keys (even the OEM system builder keys... which, I assume is what you are referring to, has a lower activation count)

In addition, digital entitlement is only applicable to Win 7 and Win 8 keys upgraded to Win 10 (or store purchased versions)

Win 10 key activation is tied to that specific hardware via the installation ID (as of old) - if the harddrive (or any component other than the mobo) is changed, that key can re-activate the changed installation online ( as with a retail key transfer to new hardware... in most instances that holds true for System builder keys as well, as they have a higher tolerance than eg. OEM-COA keys)

Yup, I believe what you said, but wanted to see other stuff... So, you say that is a brand new non-OEM mobo? Never had Windows on it before?

I have been assuming you have Win 10 keys - probably not then...which would explain the digital licence.

OK, too many variables here then - but humour me, and check your keys with ShowKey anyway.
