Use the Portable Apps version. It requires no install and won't interfere with anything. You could even put it on a USB and run it from that, then unplug it when done.

But will it open MS Works files? My O.O. files are opening since I uninstalled MS Office 365.

Okay, when I get back to my desktop I'll download it to a USB flash drive. What do I do when I get the file, copy and paste to USB stick, then open?

The Portable App 'installer' contains all the files in a compressed package. Run it and it will ask you where to unpack them to (and that's all it does, no windows settings will be modified). Point it to your USB (or a folder on your PC, if you want the app to run faster) and it will unpack all the required files for you. Start Libre Office by running LibreOfficePortable.exe from where you unpacked it, use File Manager to find it.

I'll put a folder on my desktop then and give it a try. LibreOffice will not become my default word processor will it? I only need it to open my old MS Works files. O.O. is working good since I uninstalled MS Office 365.

I downloaded LibreOffice portable but it still will not open my old MS Works files. Wonder what the problem is?

Would you mind attaching one and let us check it? If it won't attach directly may need to compress it [zip it]. Don't worry about the contents, I see more things on computers that I could talk about every week but in this small town I would ruin my work if I talked.

No. You can, but you'd have to deliberately choose it as default yourself (such as using 'Open with...' and ticking the 'always use...' box).

When I try to upload it to you, I get an error message, "Invalid File". All of my old MS Works look like O.O. files, even the ones on my external HD, so they would all be invalid if the first one was. If I put OfficeLibre portable on the HD would that make a difference...probably not, as I'd have to connect to USB port to see it, and all doc. files look like O.O. files, and, as I said OfficeLibre won't open any of them. What to do...oh what to do!

It's the file extension that causes that. The only file types you're allowed to upload are...
...simple solution: put it in a .zip file and upload that.

This is what happens when I upload the file in a zipped folder...hope this helps. TV Calibration.zip

How do I make old MS Works files compatible w/Win 10?

The document opened fine in my Works 9, I resaved it as a .doc file which you should be able to open in OpenOffice or LibreOffice in addition to Wordpad [Start, W section, Windows Accessories]. The .doc file also opened in LibreOffice. The original .wps file opens fine in LibreOffice Writer.

I can open that .wps document in Libre Office Portable. Just run LibreOfficePortable.exe and use its 'Open File' to browse and find it. It will automatically open that document in Writer. Then I could 'Save as..' a .docx (or any other) format.

But I don't have Works 9. If I did, I could open those files too. I want to be able to click on a file like I just sent you and have it open in OfficeLibre or OpenOffice and that's not happening. Can I convert these old files as .doc files like you did and if so, how? Thanks for your assistance.
