    How do I upgrade from Windows 7 while also moving my OS to another drive?


    Hi,

    I've recently bought an SSD for my PC and I'd like to get a fresh install of Windows 10 on it. Currently I have an HDD split into partition C for the OS (Windows 7) and partition D for other stuff.

    I thought about creating a new partition on the SSD and installing Windows 10 over there and then merging the HDD's 2 partitions (C & D). Is this the correct way to go about it, or will the old Windows 7 install eat up space on my hard drive unnecessarily?

    In your shoes I would
    1. Take a backup of the OS drive with Macrium Reflect, as suggested
    2. Download the ISO and do an Upgrade install (step 7 in this tutorial)
    Macrium gives you a way back if the upgrade doesn't work, and I also think that doing an Upgrade install is probably likely to be your quickest route to being activated on Windows 10 by the deadline.

    Once activated, you can consider doing a clean install later but without the time pressure.
