  1. How has everyone's upgrade experience been?

    Agreed.

Not yet (I was going to do it earlier today but I forgot).
    Thanks for the suggestion.

I'll try it when I start up LM17.2 and VMware Player (I'm using W7 at the moment).

How has everyone's upgrade experience been?

I've upgraded from both 7 (way back at the beginning of the Insiders Program) and 8.1 more recently, and it went surprisingly well from each. I was kind of surprised it worked at all from Win7!

I've used upgrade all times except one when I did a clean install, didn't notice any difference between them other than having to redo my personalization settings after the clean install. Before I uninstalled the VM it seemed to take much longer to upgrade, 3 to 4 hours as opposed to under an hour in a dual boot environment.

I'm running W7 Home Premium SP1 retail as my main OS.

The biggest difference was getting off of a VM and setting up a dual boot, I did that to see how W10 would function on the computer without a VM. On the VM it seemed slower, jittery and prone to momentary freezes, all of those items cleared when running on the dual boot, for me W10 runs much better when not on a VM.

I haven't had any problems with doing upgrades along the way, IMO advising users to do a clean install to avoid problems with an upgrade is covering up an existing problem with that computer. As long as that condition still exists every upgrade will turn into a "clean install"

  6. Being able to download the iso image of Windows 10 through bittorrent channels, that's not a shabby idea @Jimbo.

I wish Microsoft would have made it easier to do a clean install. Having to go through the download, then the lengthy upgrade, and then do a clean install seems like more steps to take for me. Back up user data, wipe down the hard drive, deploy and put back user data in place.

I'm going to get an iso image of 10 and install that clean on my system as well as a laptop for someone else. By the way, that tablet mode in the recent builds, that is elegantly done!

  7. I have done mostly upgrades. However I went back to 8.1 pro on one machine and then went back to 10160 and upgrades after and never had any real problems. I plan to do an esd to iso when the final upgrade happens. then keep that copy for until they give us a good iso.
My feelings are that I have the original DVD's created when I purchased and started with 8.0 Pro.
I feel that if I want to I should be able to re install either 8.0 or 10 Pro on this machine as long as I want to.
In following this forum it gets confusing about whether MS is going to take our old license in exchange for 10?
If that is the case then 10 is not FREE?
    Will wait and see.

  8. How has everyone's upgrade experience been?

I upgraded from Windows 7 to the 10074 Preview via the Insiders page, then upgraded to each new build after that to 10240 via Windows update. I lost track of how many upgrades I did, 6 or 7 maybe? A few glitches along the way, nothing big though. Tiles with no icons in them and one or two with weird names. Fixed easily though. I had issues with early builds before 10074 though, and ended up doing a clean install to fix things.

I upgraded over W7 once and over W8.1 Pro three times and in all cases it has worked fine. Of course there were some glitches, but nothing that other Insiders weren't having as well.

  10. Coke Robert; What I do is do the update and right after that I go into drive c and get the install.esd file and convert it to and ISO file per the instructions here on the forum and then create a dvd and then I can do a clean install from that after backing files up. I also create a complete image of my sytem and also a files and folders backup using Macrium Reflect.
Once you create a esd to iso a couple of times it is very easy and straight forward. As long as you don't do any system cleanup programs or ccleaner the esd file stays on the system.

I'm not sure why anyone bothers doing clean installs of all these beta/preview models, as long as the upgrade goes ok...
for me, I am not going to bother with that until the actual release comes out on July 29th, then I will do it the first time, and thats it.

Its alot of unnecessary work, IMO, as long as your upgrade goes smoothly, and you dont have any "deal killer" issues..
Of course, if you have alot of time on your hands, I guess I can see why folks might do it, but I have had 6or 7 updates since joining the program, and every update was virtually trouble free, so I never bothered with a clean install..

I have alot of programs on my pc, so to re-install them all every time is just plain silly, unless I had some serious system issues

  12. I've only resorted to a clean install because my upgrade install had issues. If that's happened to you 2 or 3 times your inclined to not even bother doing an upgrade, and just clean install. There were a lot of issues with early builds for me.

understandable, especially if it happened more than once!

  14. Sometimes its just quicker to start over than to screw around trying to fix things. Especially if those with a similar issue aren't getting anywhere. Then somebody chimes in that a clean install fixed things for them.

    Hello All,
New to the forum, first time posting.
Just wanted to share my upgrade/install experience.
I've always done clean installs as the few in-place upgrades I've done in the past have all gone bad. But this time I decided to give it a shot on my 2nd backup system(Win 7 x64). I'm a content creator by profession so I have all the Adobe software, Davinci Resolve, Office 2010, Acrobat, Steam games, yadi yada and assorted other programs. Downloaded the ISO, mounted on a bootable flash drive and off I went. Install took about 20 minutes or so. To my delight it booted to the new desktop and everything worked. This is the first time that it all went without a hitch. Now, I always setup my workstations by turning off all the eye candy, put the usual desktop icons on the desktop, use the classic quick launch in the task bar and a neutral gray color scheme. Everything came over just the way left it. I am very pleased. Ultimately I will do the clean install anyway. The one thing that is not working completely is Cortana. She refuses to open any programs. She always opens a browser as search term, no matter what or how I type the request. I also always disable Superfetch, Windows search and Indexing because leaving them on continuously thrashes the hard drives. I don’t know if this affecting Cortana’s ability to open programs. And I haven’t been able to find any posts or documentation on the web.

    Cheers

P.S. - I really wish you guys had an RSS feed.
