Yep, I would not even try the update for a couple of months at least. There is no reason to rush it.

I have my Creators Update set to defer feature updates for 365 days *Smile

And I held on to the AU for as long as possible.

The problem with it was Nvidia told me that I need to do an update. I had a graphic card update failed on the install and then Nvidia told me that I had to patch this update in order to get the graphics card to work. So it’s not about holding off as this was not told to me as an option. Had I known.......would never had tried to update either. Shame on windows....bad rollout. Truth is they have wasted an entire day of work for me and it’s still not done! All the while now having graphics card issues because the windows patch won’t update.

Ya maybe shame on Navidia but It’s definitely not the first time that I’ve had windows pointing the finger at Nvidia and then them pointing the finger at windows. In fact this seems to be a common theme for the last couple years. I have the 970 or 980 I can’t remember.

Are you getting your drivers from nvidia ?

I have not had any nvidia driver issues in a very long time, and I had 2 980 Ti`s up until a month ago.

Go back to the drivers you were using and hold off on the windows FCU for at least a few months, if not longer.

I just installed the latest drivers, 388.13, and they work great with all my games on the Creators Update.

Yeah I think you’re right I totally agree and I appreciate your help. It’s honestly too late now. I am seven hours into this update and patch from windows and would’ve never done it I had it given me a prompt telling me it would’ve taken so long never. In fact what tends to always work is waiting about a week after all the patches already pushed out then doing it and I never seem to have issues. But I’ve had some previous issues in the last couple years with Nvidia patches and then them saying it’s a Windows thing and window saying it’s a Nvidia thing.

Update-over 20 hours and the Windows patch update was still looping and failed. Only option was to do a hard computer restart restarted and prompt said it was a failed restart and downloaded the patch again. Took over another couple hours. Fortunately I didn’t have to do a complete computer restore from the failed windows update! I got lucky. Not a way I like to manage updates and seems a poor launch. If it’s not ready for the market why would windows say I have an update available in the first place? My only guess is to let it’s customers beta test it at the expense of the UX. This really leaves yet another bad taste in my mouth for windows and speaks volumes as to why I should switch to a MAC.

  10. If the update process is in the download stage, terminating it should not pose a problem. However, after that I would not terminate it. I have an i7 with 8 cpu's, and the installation took about 45 minutes from start to finish.

If you want/need the FCU that bad, just download the ISO file make a dvd or usb installer and do a clean install.

After download hung at 94 %, I found it restricted by the time window. Had never seen this before. I think I just extended the time from 7p to 11p.

Download completed, install started and went through a few restarts appeared to be progressing normally.

But I've been watching the progress wheel for more than 12 hours since. I'm not prepared for any repair procedure so can't risk interrupting.

What is the longest time I should wait expecting a positive outcome?

  14. Hi Mike1951.

I'd think you are there. 12 hours is a long time.

Do you have a back up of your data?

Do you access to another computer?

It's just that I struggle with things I used to know how to do.

Earlier this week, I plugged in a 2TB external and copied an image. Also, created a recovery disc. But I tried to eject it and nothing happened (no button on drive) and the eject option no longer appears. DVD drive no longer appears. See why I want to avoid issues?

Edge was the original problem in 1703. Settings would lock up, browser would randomly close. 1709 was said to have a repair function Incorporated. BTW, I'm an old hard head that only uses a local account, so I won't access anything that requires a MS login.

    Will keep watching..

The wheels on the bus go round and round.....
