  1. How MSFT's tricky new Windows 10 pop-up deceives you into upgrading

In my case it was during the actual install of Windows 8.1. Microsoft installed an update just before the first reboot where you log in for the first time. The popup in the article, is something different. It's a change to the Get Windows 10 App, that installs via Windows update on systems already running Windows 7 or 8.1. I never got that far before I was prompted to upgrade.

I had also tried a clean install or Windows 7 with SP1. I saw no such screen during its install. It wouldn't update via Windows update though. I lost patience waiting for anything to happen after more than a day of checking for updates and wiped it to try Windows 8.1.

All I can say is IF you read the pop-up it says exactly what it is going to do. There is nothing sneaky about it.

Based on your Windows Update Settings, this PC is scheduled to upgrade on " Day, Date, Time. Click here to change upgrade schedule or cancel scheduled upgrade”.

The problem is people are either too stupid to read or understand what they did read.

Seems pretty self explanatory to me.

Clicking the Red X Box doesn't Activate anything. It closes the notification window that allows you to change or cancel the upgrade.

  3. They changed what happens when you close with the RED X. Now clicking the RED X is taken as an acceptance and a go ahead to do the upgrade. In the past doing that was taken as declining the offer.

    Ah, OK.

Yes - if you're installing Windows 8.1 you have to watch out before the end of the install. Amongst all the 'ON/OFF' options there's an option to 'Download and install Important Updates automatically' (or words to that effect) and it is ON by default. It can be missed easily.

I got caught by that a while back when I did an 8.1 install but all it did was put up an almost full screen pop-up saying "Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 10... etc." after W8.1 finished installing. I'm guessing that's now changed.

The best option now is to install Windows 8.1 (and Windows 7) offline - I just turn my modem/router off - and change the Windows Update settings to 'Check for updates but let me choose...' before going online. (I can't go online with Windows 7 anyway during the install because W7 doesn't have drivers for the network adapter on my motherboard).

Microsoft U-turn on 'nasty trick' pop-up

Nasty thing is though they will have got a few thousand to upgrade unwittingly, Microsoft really are nasty with this, why not just admit Windows 10 is not going as planned, if it was so good people would be eager to upgrade, Windows 7 had no adoption problems no auto upgrades and people had to pay !

  6. I was pretty sure that option was there after the fact. I just didn't feel like starting over to verify it. Plus, the whole point of my clean install was to see what Microsoft is up to in regards to the free upgrade. I wanted to do it like the average Joe would do it. I'm already running Windows 10 on all my PC's anyway. The only time I install Windows 7 or 8 is for testing purposes.

  8. How MSFT's tricky new Windows 10 pop-up deceives you into upgrading

I just turned that Windows 8.1 PC back on and ran Windows update manually. It did the checking for updates for about 10 minutes then just displayed a "Upgrade to Windows 10" "Start installing the latest version of Windows now". "More info" and "Get started" are the only two options shown in that message box. More info just opens IE to the FAQ page for the free upgrade. The only other option underneath it is "show all updates"? Talk about in your face and making it impossible to actually do anything but upgrade..
If I go to show all updates there are 222 listed as important and 11 optional. Some say they are security updates, and some say update for Windows 8.1. Non of them say they are the one that does the upgrade, and Upgrade to Windows 10 is not in the list? So now what do you do? Thanks Microsoft for really complicating peoples computing experience. It looks like there is no way to run Windows update manually without upgrading to Windows 10?

  9. OK, it looks like if you just wait and do nothing, it installs the updates in the list. I just went back in after typing the above post and it was prompting me to reboot to complete the updates. It says installing 30 or 127 as I type this. That was very confusing and not intuitive at all? Planed that way on purpose? It looks to me like they are hoping people will just click the get started button without realizing what they are actually doing. I won't know until its finished if it snuck Windows 10 in the mix or not. It doesn't appear so, why do all those updates if its going to upgrade anyway.

EDIT: so far so good, still on Windows 8.1.

I noticed from the screenshot that the "for a limited time" bit has been removed from the free upgrade bit on the pop-up... a deliberate omission?... also wonder why they would change GWX so close to it 'supposedly' being nuked ... roll-on 30 July. Gonna be fun 'n games for the Win 7/8 die-hards if it's still around.

  12. Superfly, I agree with you that most people who choose to stay with 7 or 8 are making a mistake. But tricking them into an upgrade isn't ethical.

I haven't seen any mention of "limited time" so far in my adventure. Just that's its free.

It looks like the upgrade to Windows 10 was in the list of updates? When I went to show all updates "important" was selected. I had to switch it to optional to see it. I thought they were all in the one list on the screen, my bad. I found it when I ran Windows update a second time. Only about half were installed the first time around. I ticked the box to select all and clicked the install button. If you go to show all updates there is an install option shown. On the main screen its not there. Anyway, I immediately got a downloading windows 10 message. I was able to cancel. That's when I took a better look at the list of updates. There it was way at the bottom under optional. At least its still in the optional list. For now anyway.

Make one little slip up and welcome to Windows 10.

  14. It's not as cut and dried, switching to Windows 10, as some would think. If you have very basic computing skills, it could be risky doing it. It's almost certainly going to break your factory OEM recovery option for one thing. If it fails and your left with a non functional PC, that could be money out of pocket to pay somebody with the skill to recover it. There are plenty of valid reasons not to do it. And plenty of valid reasons to do it. To some, doing the upgrade to get the digital entitlement, and then rolling back sounds too risky. Especially if you have very old hardware.
Then there are those that won't do it just because. *Rolleyes

Don't get me wrong, I detested it from the start... besides it's "strong-arm" tactics, it had(?still has) huge flaws technically with the upgrade process.

Thanx alpha, for taking the time and effort to provide some useful first-hand info *Wink
