How to change a USB Stick from Pro to Home and vice Versa

    Hi,

there is one thing I do not unmderstand when creating a USB Stick using the Media Creation Tool: I can have both flavors, i.e. x64 and x86 on one Stick, but not Home and Pro, why? I thought this is simply a flag that can be set.

My task: I have to update several PCs with one USB Stick, running former versions of Windows of all kinds, i.e 32 and 64 Bit, but also Home and Pro. Do I really need to create two sticks, one with Home, one with Pro, or can I change that somehow in a configuration file on the stick?

    :)

Hello ErikDe Welcome to the Ten Forums!

The Media Center Tool is geared to see the options for either the 32bit or 64bit flavor for the correct edition you need in order to upgrade to 10. But you can run the tool several times going back and forth to download both flavors for both editions or download the two combination 32/64bit larger ISO files that will require a larger 8gb or 16gb flash drive.

That was allow people to have the choice for the 32bit or 64bit if they decide to swap the architecture once 10 has upgraded over the previous version. I did that on a 32bit 7 laptop in order to see the 64bit 10 go on. First the upgrade followed actually at first with a 32bit clean install to follow and then going for the 64bit.

Up until now I has wondered if someone would find a way for what had been seen for Windows 7 of the "Unlocked ISO" but instead someone found a way of substitution by way of swapping out files on the combo stick in order to see a "4-in-1" stick made up?! You have to go the thread seen for this however. Solved How to make 4 in 1 installation USB? - Windows 10 Forums

    Hey,

thanks for your reply, this sounds quite complicated. I was hoping for something like editing a config file (ei.cfg and change editionid, as it was the case with Windows 7 images). But there is no ei.cfg on my stick, so that probably changed.

I also would like to save the download of another ISO image, since my internet connection is not so fast. So I was hoping that the actual differences between the ISOs are small. In fact, I don't understand why there are different ISOs for different versions at all (except for the architecture), since Microsoft could use the same image and provide features according to the license key entered.

So if anybody knows a trick how to make that easier.... *Smile

  7. Remember the RTSevenLite as well used to integrate SP1 into the unlocked iso? *Smile This is what has been found to work by NavyLCDR since MS wasn't going to make things as easy as seen with 7 back then.

I saw that and ended up posting it on the thread here. The combo downloaded by the tool comes in at 5.55gb before rounding that off a little to 5.6gb on the drive itself suggesting an 8gb flash drive should do the trick. Unfortunately the 8gbers I have left will be turned into additional Recovery Drives once I upgrade a few more laptops likely.

The two downloads seen there would be for the set up media some custom builder would use under a volume license for multiple installs if not a service and repair shop. I figure if you extract the contents of the combined iso into a folder and then substitute the files while on the drive then you can proceed to see a new bootable iso made up ready to see written to flash drives.

Of course that can done from the files already on the modified flash drive where you take those and turn them into the large ISO file that will be ready to go onto any number of USB Install Keys. To find out if the key is made up correctly or come out ok you have to boot live from it however not while being booted in 10! You will be prompted for a replacement key without the skip option once the installer detects the present copy of 10 you are in at the time. For any upgrade to repair install using this live boot only!

My MSDN ISO's are Multi Edition and can install Home or Pro. They are 32 bit or 64 bit though. Unfortunately you need an MSDN subscription to actually download them. Not sure why the Media Creation Tool doesn't offer the same option?

  9. It's because you have a paid subscription you can try out all sorts of MS softwares as well as combinations of each Windows version! That makes things a whole lot easier! As some would say that have their's "well mine activated without problem" simply due to having direct access to a good number of things.

For the non subscribers on the other hand they have to take what they can get in a sense. The MC tool however simplifies things by allowing you to go back for each choice to see individual ISO downloads in order to see media made up for each individually as well as combining the 32bit and 64bit flavors in one for each edition. Since 10 is free as an upgrade only that makes more sense since you are limited to the one edition per machine.
