How to change FileExplorer(windows explorer)background to Grey

I'm afraid that is currently not possible. This would not be possible without some hardcoded hacks. In Windows 8.X its possible because of the complete UXtheme engine, that is yet to get completed in terms of Windows 10. You can compare it to sauriks Cydia and Winterboard. In pre-iOS7 it was possible to change the looks of almost anything in the system, but after iOS 7 got released with the recoded UX library, Winterboard had to be rewritten and till today, its still only possible to change the icons and other small details. Nothing major.

How to change FileExplorer(windows explorer)background to Grey

Hi, I quite agree starting at glaring off-white backgrounds is hard on the eyes, and MS took away the ability to change that from Win 8 on.

Aa really neat way to change this in explorer is to install freeware Qttabbar
    QTTabBar - QuizoApps

This gives you full control of different regions of the explorer pane (any colour you want) as well as adding tabs and other features. Also changes the control panel.
Some here, like me, have used it successfully. It survived the November TH2 upgrade.

To change the background of many other windows, you can do a small registry hack, well known from Windows 8 on - maybe earlier.

    Registry hack => e.g. Wordpad:

    Hello,

If the registry hack you are talking about is the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Colors tweak, it's not working for me on Windows 10 Home x64. I simply change the string for Window from 255 255 255 (which is white) to 192 192 192 (which is silver), but every time Windows restarts, it changes back to 255 255 255. I'm guessing this is a theme based thing, that's why it's going back to white.

I don't really mind folder background, I would like for background color to be changed in MS Word and Excel applications and not a document-based background which appears on a printed paper, but a Windows based tweak to show for all windows (this includes folders and Office apps) the color silver in background.

The HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Colors tweak works fine in Windows 7, 8 and 8.1, but doesn't seem to work in Windows 10.

Isn't there any other workaround for this?

Sorry for having my 1st post as a request / support question, but I am new to Windows 10 and it's hard to edit documents 8 hours a day with a white background, even with 25% screen brightness. *Shock

I also tried other themes (ie high contrast themes) but they are not really what I need, they have too much contrast. Even with changing their options and making my own, something always doesn't show correctly. Also, editing high contrast themes is a pita because for every text color change you have to save the theme with a new, different name. *Mad

    Thank you in advance.

Hi, the colour will be reset (I found in Win 8) on resume from sleep and hibernation. Maybe restart too now- I can't recall.

    That's normal now.

    Solution- what I did was
    a. save what I was happy with as a theme.
    b. write a small script that refreshed that theme on logon.

If you would like to know how, please ask. It took quite a while to work out how to to that as it's not very obvious.

I found a way to make Word / Excel / possibly other apps with grey background after meddling with an already created theme - the theme I liked.

I had to go to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Themes and copied my theme to desktop.
There, I renamed it to something suggestive (ie customized) then right clicked on it, open with - notepad.

Inside, I navigated to the bottom to find the exact registry entries from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Colors.

I changed Window from 255 255 255 to 192 192 192, saved, copied it back to the Themes folder, went to desktop - right clicked, selected personalize - themes - theme settings and chose the customized theme.

Background changed immediately, but if you have Word / Excel / etc running, you might need to restart them.

This worked for me, at least for Word / Excel, not for folder backgrounds. I still have to look into that. That still remains my question. Is this possible for folder backgrounds too?

I will meddle some more when I have time and post the solution if I can find one.

The registry entry method applies to many backgrounds and fields, and is one I would recommend.

It does not apply to explorer or control panel.

For those as discussed previously if I recall you can use QTTABBAR (Quizo's version, free) which allows you to customise different panes individually.

How to change FileExplorer(windows explorer)background to Grey

I tried QTTabBar but looked a bit hard to work with. I read their readme document but found no reference to folder background change. Plus, after selecting the QT Base Toolbar, I see no change (new options) in folders.

I must be doing something wrong.

    Hi, here's my explorer.

And here's a hint as to how to access qttabbar's options. Rt click on the tab bar in explorer (where the tabs appear).
Note: you will probably need to enable the qttabbar toolbar in explorer to see it.

And here are (eg) wordpad and notepad benefiting from a registry background change (which affects several other areas- but not all)

I didn't find the stuff you said above written anywhere in their documentation. I didn't know that I have to select QTTabBar first to access the options. I noticed what that option was doing - tabs appearing inside same window, but I do not want that.

Thanks, you saved my day. Now I can edit my folder backgrounds.

    Cheers mate! *Party
