The developer of the programme in question is in Bosnia and I'll give him his due, replies to service requests are within minutes usually. Quite amazing,
Here's a quote from his response to my service request sent this morning (note in 2 you are the MVP mentioned):

1. My ISP's SMTP mail sending protocol is Secure (TLS) using either port 25 or port 587.

In OEClassic if I set either of those outgoing mail fails to send with an error.
I have to uncheck the Secure box in order for the mail to be sent.

No it is not. It is 25 or 587 with TLS unchecked. That is the correct setting.

TLS is only for port 465 not other ports. Other ports are StartTLS.

In OE Classic StartTLS is automatic if using ports 25 or 587. So TLS checkbox needs not to be checked and that is good, secure and working setting.

2. Previous Report - Unable to make OEClassic the default mail client or the default for the "MAILTO" protocol in Windows 10 (or Windows 7 I have since found out) still needs attention.

A Microsoft MVP has told me that it's because the programme is failing to register properly with Windows.

No, it registers properly but reading command line parameters is missing from the main executable:

Setting OE Classic as default program is partially finished feature
and requires more work. Right now the program is registered with the
system but command line parameters required to open files from other

programs are not yet implemented. This has been asked by many users

and therefore it is high priority feature which will be added in the
very future version of OE Classic.

So please stay tuned until we have future version which will add
support for this as well as other improvements.

Note that there are other ways to do what you want to do - for

example it may not be needed to send something from other programs,
it can still be sent from OE Classic using "Attach" button or by
means of copy-pasting address if it is mailto: link. It depends on
what you want to do actually.

So it is not actually needed to set the program as default mail

program to utilize it. You can send and receive emails in it without

setting it as default program.

Setting as default is only required if you need to send attachments
from other programs (by means of using "Email this" functions), but

this doesn't mean this cannot be used without it - you can save

whatever that particular program is created and use "Attach" button
to attach as attachment. Same goes for "mailto" links. They cannot be
clicked but you can extract email from mailto link and send a message
to it.

So for example to extract an address from mailto: link you can do

this:

- right click mailto link and copy it to clipboard (copy link)
- paste it into editor area and look into it
- extract whatever is inside after mailto: text e.g.
mailto:someone@somewhere.com?Subject=Hello

It is quite obvious to extract "someone@somewhere.com" to be email
address from above mailto: link and subject line to be "Hello".

Also, thinking ahead, the programme needs to be transformed to an x64 programme.

There is no benefit in doing that – it will only become larger and slower. But we will have 64bit version eventually.

I don't understand the bit about extracting the mailto contents to an editor....what editor?

If I click on a mailto link or mailto shortcut, I want the 'Compose' window to open immediately! Period!

I just want the MailTo to open the email client of my choice, not what Microsoft thinks I should be using.
