How to create Virtual Memory on a secondary SSD

Virtual memory, also known as a Page file, adds to the physical RAM by using disk space. However, moving the page file to a secondary SSD can help free up space if you run out of space on the primary. When doing so, we have noticed many reports that suggest it doesn’t work, and the […]

If I have multiple SSDs is it better to assign the non-OS SSD to be the Virtual Memory device?

    Hi Everyone!

If I have multiple SSDs, My OS SSD will be 1TB and I have a secondary 500Gb SSD, would it be better to reassign the virtual memory

to be the secondary 500Gb SSD, or is there no real advantage to doing so?

    Thank you,

  3. Windows successfully diagnosed the condition of no virtual memory.

    Hi, AleksanderBR

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

We understand that you are experiencing issues related to virtual memory. There are times when Windows automatically allocates to virtual memory may not be sufficient for you to use certain software, in this case, you can try to set it manually:

    1. Open System Properties:

    • Right-click on "This computer" or "My computer" icon and select "Properties".
    2. Access Advanced System Settings:

    • In the System Properties window, click "Advanced System Settings" on the left side.
    3. View the performance settings:

    • Under the "Advanced" tab of the "System Properties" window, click "Settings" in the "Performance" section.
    4. Open the virtual memory settings:

    • In the "Performance Options" window, click on the "Advanced" tab, then locate the "Virtual Memory" section and click "Change". Click "Change".

Adjust the virtual memory to the size you want to use.

Furthermore, you can submit your ideas and suggestions about Virtual memory through the Feedback Hub, and the development team will regularly review submissions for ideas or fixes.

Please share the feedback link here after submitting as it will allow others on the forum to vote for your submission, including me. More votes will lead to more visibility and higher priority to the development team.

  4. How to create Virtual Memory on a secondary SSD

    Virtual Memory

This question has been answered before—but I can never really get a definitive answer. So here goes....

Currently, I have 12 GB of RAM in my machine. Windows, on its own, has made the page file the same size. From what I've read, people suggest the page file be either 1.5x-2x the amount of ram. My question... is there a sweet spot where you can disable virtual memory? Say like if you have 32 GB. Also, since paging happens quite often, it's a no-no to have the page file on an SSD, right? So, in a system with SSD and HDD, and say you still need virtual memory, it should be placed on the HDD instead?
