How to delete individual or specific System Restore Point in Windows 10

System Restore feature in Windows doesn’t offer a direct way to delete individual restore points. It only offers to restore. This can be inconvenient when there are too many restore points taking space, and you do not want to delete all of them. The Disk Cleanup Tool lets you delete all System Restore Points. This post will help you learn how you can delete individual or specific System Restore Point in Windows 10

How to delete selected System Restore Point

System Restore points are also called Volume Shadow Copies. Internally, Windows manages them using the vssadmin program that can be used from Command Prompt or PowerShell. This program can list restore points, delete them, and also resize the shadow copy storage association.

To delete an individual or restore point, follow these steps:

Open Command Prompt or PowerShell with admin privileges.

Type the following command and press the Enter key.

    vssadmin list shadows

This will display all the restore points available on the computer.

Find the System Restore point based on date, and note the ID (Shadow Copy ID) and use it in the following command:

    vssadmin delete shadows /{ID}

Once done, it will delete the shadow copy or restore point associated with the Shadow ID.

It is easy, but it can be confusing for users because of too much data that appears on the Command Prompt. The better way to approach it is to open the System Restore interface and then visually understand the available Restore points. Y

ou can also view the affected programs to have a clear understanding. The vssadmin command doesn’t display the name or description associated with the Restore point to add to the confusion.

    • Type System Restore in the Start menu and click to open the program
    • Click on the System Restore button to open the wizard
    • Select Choose a different restore point, and click on the Next button.
    • Check the box which says Show more restore points

You can then check the description for each restore point to understand, then make a note and choose which one to delete.

Be aware older restore point will result in the loss of installed programs. While Windows creates a system restore point for every major installation, make sure to create it on your own regularly. You can even set the computer to automatically create one every day which may work in a better way.

How to delete inactive System Image Restore Points in System Restore

    Windows 10 64-bit.
When I click "show more restore points" in System Restore I see a bunch of old "system image restore points" that were deleted in past and do not correspond to any currently active restore points. Clicking any of these old restore points, I simply get an error message saying they could not be found, and to select another restore point instead.I would like to delete these restore points listings but have been unable to do so.
So far, I have tried steps mentioned below without any luck :

Disk Cleanup through (CHow to delete individual or specific System Restore Point in Windows 10 :) Properties
Disable System Protection (OFF and ON) in System Protection for OS (CHow to delete individual or specific System Restore Point in Windows 10 :)
Disk Space Usage to minimum (slider button all the way to the left then 'Delete all restore points for this drive'),
Delete all shown Restore points in CCleaner (the problem ones do not show here),
Reset Windows Backup to Default in Windows 10 with 'Reset_Windows_Backup.bat' utility.

    Any suggestions highly welcome.

  3. Windows 10 system image restore points unable to delete

Have deleted system image backups using the windows 10 suggested method. But 2 system image rstore points are still listed under other backups. Have tried all the suggested methods on the net and from the microsoft community, but the system image restore
points remain. Even after deleting all but the last normal restore points. I guess I can just ignore them. Would appreciate any advice as nothing seems to remove them.

Delete System Restore Points in Windows 10

    Hi Brink,

I thought perhaps it might have something to do with Windows Backup but have always had the Manage Windows Backup disk space option set to: Keep only the recent system image.

I deleted all the restore points for D: (backup drive) thru System Protection. Don't believe System Restore has ever been on for D: drive. Even tho doing this indicates the Restore points have been successfully deleted the 3.52 GB value always remains.

I had to go thru a few gyrations this morning to clear the normal Restore Points I found another poster suggesting almost identical problem = System restore - weird behavior. Thought may be symptom of a larger issue.

Thank you for your assistance once again.
