How to delete update 1703. (downloaded but not installed yet)

    Hello friends.

Windows sneakingly managed to fully download the update 1703 to my pc. I had deferred it, I set wireless as metered connection and I lost the battle, the update is downloaded and ready to be installed. But I cant find it in windows update to "delete" it... I don't want it *Mad

    What can be done?

    Thanks

    :)

Are you using disk imaging as we strongly and repeatedly advocate? If so, you could restore a recent image of C:
(e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot medium + external storage for disk image sets)

I suspect the file is held here: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Otherwise - useful tools to have- you could try this:
Download and install and run one of
    Locate32
    Ultrasearch
Everything by void tools (beta version if that's still the latest for extra GUI functions the others have)

Let the program index (quite quick).

Then search for a file over 3Gb, say, assuming it's one file. The search will be almost instant.

I'm in a similar position in a way; still on the Anniversary build, upgrade deferred.
Recently the creator's build was offered, but I also had updates set to notify before download. So it was not downloaded.

I have now set a time delay of 180 days via group policy.

Thus I have control of my updates - the weakness you have is that you're not getting any updates generally with the metered connection set.

(Defer = delay, as I'm sure you know... for some months- more info if you read about it).

Thanks a lot for the reply bro!

I did a WindowsImageBackup in september 2016. Is it preferable to restore from it? I'm afraid it will be messy...

In the \Download folder I found a file named "state" 1kb and "WindowsUpdateBox.exe" 19,511kb in a folder named "82f617126cce53d385dc3a428fb4aa65" plus some other 7 files total 19,3 MB

    I got ultrasearch,
What exactly should I type in search field? I did "windows" and I've found 87 files of the day of the download, the biggest being Windows10.0-KB4032188-x64.cab with 847 MB size.

It's possible that a smaller file is downloaded and then executed, rather than the whole 3-4Gb being downloaded (which is what you get if you download an iso file to update manually or create a bootable medium.

You can check the date the file was created.

It is safe to delete the content of that folder.

Over a month later... Just now I managed to reply and close this thread. Sorry about that.

Bro. It was a disaster! I deleted those files but Windows couldnt restart, it just stayed at that screen "preparing updates or something...", then I got impatient and forced shutdown *Madand then windows couldnt be restored anymore. So I did a fresh Win install and got all Creators updates etc...

The only reason I was hesitating to go on with these 3D stuff is because my PC is only for Audio recording/production, nothing else.

But u know what? I'm really loving how windows is freaking stable and light.*Cool

    Thanks for ur support anyway.
