Windows 10: How to disable or remove Direct Access

We were doing some work on our Remote Desktop settings and it seems to have enabled Direct Access. This seems to have broken IPv4 access to DNS, preventing domain users from being to resolve any host names to IP addresses.


We're trying to undo it, but we're not sure how to reverse the effects. So far, we've tracked down the network device that got set as the Direct Access server and disabled the Routing and Remote Access service, but all that seems to have done is prevent users from contacting the domain server for group policy updates.


After digging around on some forums, I found information on uninstalling it using the powershell command "Uinistall-RemoteAccess -Force", but I'm concerned that simply removing it will leave traces behind that might still prevent users from being able to resolve DNS addresses.


Is there a recommended way to disable/remove Direct Access or at least restore DNS connectivity in this case?

Disable "Quick Access"

You may try the steps listed for
v1607 here, and reverse the earlier method you used to disable Qa.

 

Remove account

I suggest you backup your personalized files first before removing the account.
To delete an account, follow these steps:

1. Press WIN + X keys and click Command Prompt (Admin) from the menu.
2. Type the following command and press Enter. Replace test with the name of your sister's account. Code:

 

Quick Access not searching Pictures folder

Summary, that last suggestion didn't work.

• I moved the pictures to another folder temporarily.

• Then I tried to remove the Pictures folder with option one at Add or Remove Folders from This PC in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials. Even after rebooting, the Pictures folder remained.
• So I tried using option two. Same thing: reboot >> Pictures folder still there.

• Since there were no troubleshooting steps for this scenario, just for the heck of it, I ran through the restore steps. Copied some pictures into the Pictures folder, ran a Quick Access search and initial problem remains: Searching all of QA doesn't find any files in Pictures folder, running search on just the Pictures folder does. I want to run a global search and find matching files in any/all of the Documents, Music, Videos, and Pictures folders.

That article dates from 2015 and I'm guessing is out of date. I hope it didn't create potential future problems in my registry.

Bottom line: I'm still looking for a fix.
