Windows 10: How to fix an elusive bluetooth mute issue in Windows 10

I know a lot of people have had an issue when using some bluetooth headphones where pausing any videos in chrome, music in spotify, or music in discord mutes all audio from the computer into the headphones. I have seen thousands of forum and help posts about this in my quest to fix this issue. From chrome forums, microsoft support, to spotify forums. It actually has to be fixed for every application that has the issue. For some reason windows media overlay is a buggy piece of crap and so you have to go through every app to disable windows media key handling. Im just doing this to compile all these solutions so that nobody has to go through what I did trying to fix all this.



--Chrome--

Go to the URL "chrome://flags"

Search for Hardware Media Key Handling and change it from "Default" to "Disabled"

Restart Chrome.

Media keys will no longer work



--Spotify--

Click the down arrow next to your name.

Go to "Settings"

Scroll to the bottom and click "Show advanced settings"

Under "Display Options", find "Show desktop overlay when using media keys" and disable it.

Media keys will still work this way.



--Discord (Non Shortcut)--

Open "Registry Editor" from start menu.

Navigate to "Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"

Find Discord, Right click and choose "Modify"

Add " -disable-features=HardwareMediaKeyHandling" to the end of "Value data"

Click "Ok" and close Registry Editor.

Restart your PC.

If you use discord from a Shortcut on your desktop or from start menu then do the next step.



--Discord Shortcut (Start Menu or Desktop)--

Go to your Discord installation folder. (e.g. "C:\Users\{USER}\AppData\Local\Discord\app-{latest-version}" )

Right click "Discord.exe" and choose "Create Shortcut"

Rename Shortcut to whatever but make sure to remember it (e.g. "DiscordFlags")

Right click "DiscordFlags" and choose "Properties"

Now in "Target" at the end add " -disable-features=HardwareMediaKeyHandling"

Click "Ok"

Now navigate to where ever your shortcut is (For start menu and Cortana search use the search to find discord, right click and choose "Open file location" and there is your shortcut to modify)

Right click on the shortcut and choose "Properties"

At the end of "Target" modify "Discord.exe" to "DiscordFlags.lnk"

Click "Ok"

Remember to relaunch Discord for it to take effect.

I suggest doing both the non shortcut one no matter what and do the shortcut one if you use a shortcut to open Discord (which you likely do so basically I suggest to do both)

This will disable media key usage in Discord which isnt quite as bad.



I really do hope that microsoft either fixes the buggy mess that is the Windows Media Overlay, removes it entirely, or give an option to disable it. I have found ways to disable windows media overlay but it doesnt seem to have any effect. I believe that either the problem is with media key usage and not overlay. Or the way that third party software disables Media Overlay is purely visual. But I think I outta submit a bug report for this. IDK. Hope this helps someone.

Bluetooth in windows 10

My computer specs are as listed in the profile. I think all of you guys are correct. I don't have built-in Bluetooth in mobo.

I contacted skull candy headphones and thy have told me if I do not have built-in Bluetooth, I would need a dongle which supports at least a2dp. I do not know what the heck that means. I have a feeling I would need more than a cheap dongle.

Anyone suggest some a2dp adapters. I searched but don't know what a2dp is so couldn't make a decision

Bluetooth in windows 10

So I bought a new Bluetooth headphones the skull candy uproar since my old one isn't working. It came with only the headset and usb charging cable. The problem is I can't seem to pair it to my pc. I have windows 10 by the way. There is no Bluetooth on off button in windows settings. I went to device manager but there us no icon for Bluetooth. I did everything I knew but none of it worked.I can post pictures if anyone needs.An alternative might be a Bluetooth dongle but I m not sure I'd it would work plus I paid $50 so don't wanna spend more

I looked up on Internet and many people seem to have issues with windows 10 and Bluetooth. I thought of asking here knowing my UK friends are smart.

Anyone have any idea of how to get Bluetooth to work on my pc.

PS don't curse windows 10. I already know it's a mess and not a very good os.
