Windows 10: how to FORCE format micro-SD card?

I have a Sandisk 64gb micro-SD which I've been using happily on my phone, till I deleted one of the backup copy of the boot image and it started going corrupted.

I have tried deleting the partition in disk management, formatting in CMD (admin mode), safe mode format, but to no avail.

All the files remain intact and I can still copy/paste files to and from the card, but it immediately goes back to the same number of files/folders after I eject and put it back in. Also, my Samsung S7 refuses to read the card in normal mode now (but it's completely readable in recovery mode).

Any idea what else I can do to force format it?

Try to format it with HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool v 2.2.3 https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...e-format-tool/

It will be a single HPUSBDisk.exe file. Right Click on it and run as administrator. ( Unplug ( Safely remove) all other USB Storage devices and make sure the correct USB drive is selected.)

 

same results regardless of whether i use quick or full format. same also if i use the official SD card formatter tool.

 

I tried again using another computer and it 'successfully formatted'. However, all my data (including the volume label) is still intact on the microsd card. any advice?

 

You should be able to Format this in the Tools menu of your Phone.
Other then that, I would attach it to your computer and wipe the SD card in Diskpart.
With the drive attached, Press the Windows key+X choose Command Prompt (Admin). In the Elevated Command Prompt type the following Bold Commands pressing Enter after each one.
i) diskpart
(ie) DISKPART >
ii) list disk
(ie) DISKPART > list disk
It now lists disk by number
you have to select the disk next with
iii) select disk <disk number>
(ie) DISKPART> Select Disk (disk number) = as listed in previous command. The selected disk now has an Asterisk next to it.
iv) clean (this erases all data on the Disk, so be sure you choose the correct one)
(ie) DISKPART> clean
Type Exit to leave the command prompt.
Open Disk Management, the drive should now be Unallocated Space, here you can right click the space and choose Create a New Simple Volume. Then Format it etc.

 

I have tried the method above before posting too. Same issue - it will show as successfully formatted but my entire data is still intact. *Sad

 

You might have to face the fact that it's gone bad. One of first indications is that writing, erasing and formatting failing are first to show when it starts going bad.

 

If diskpart commands did not wipe drive, then it is almost certainly brown bread.

 

I just didn't understand how deleting a single file led to the whole card getting corrupted... *Sad

 

It most probably didn't but it only showed at that time.

 

When specific types of internal failure are detected many drives will go into a read only mode to preserve existing data. This is typically not reversible. Any operation on the drive could have triggered this detection. As such drives usually fail without warning or apparent cause this isn't really an unusual failure.

 

The thing is they don't fail little by little, just boom and they are gone.

 

use the diskpart commands first then use the hp tool. i just did this for a flash drive that i couldn't get diskpart to restore or the various 3rd party tools to restore, and now i have access to it again.
