How to get a desktop folder off the desktop?

I recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I had (and have) a downloads folder under the desktop folder (a subfolder of users) which I use(d) to store video files. As far as I can remember Windows 7 didn't show this folder with its contents on the desktop, Windows 10 does. I accidentally almost deleted the contents because I thought it was just an Icon. I like a clean desktop. I figured that Windows 10 automatically places all the folders in the desktopfolder (under users) with its contents on the desktop. I dislike that. Opposed to most people I like a clean desktop (or clean desktops once I figure out how to easily use that feature), only a very few items get on my desktop and the rest I open from the Startmenu (more convenient), I also put the most used folders on it for quick access.

My question: how do I make the desktop not show the folder without changing anything in File Explorer: still being visible in File Explorer, still the same contents, still the same location.
I could copy all the files, store the files on a different location and then delte the folder but that would be the clumsy method and I wouldn't learn to work as efficiently with this OS as should be possible. I am hoping for a more elegant solution. It should be possible to 'tell' Windows to not show this folder on my desktop but I couldn't find that option in the contextmenu of that icon. It seems like I anything I do to that desktop icon also happens to the folder itself (when I click properties...). I did google it but so far no luck. It doesn't help that I don't even know how Windows calls this.

    :)

  2. How to get the icons off of the desktop?

    Hi Hugh,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community. I understand your concern and I am glad to assist you.

If it is a shortcut icon, then right click on it and select delete.

If it is on the task bar, right click on it and select "unpin from task bar".

Hope this helps. Get back to us for further queries. We are happy yo help!

    Hi,

Right click it and check the Hidden box. Apply.
It should no longer be visible on the desktop.

Benjamin, if I were you I would open up a file like for example documents or video, and minimize it and then just drag and drop your desktop folder to that. Then after that I would just right click on the desktop icon and delete. Now no desktop icon but you do have the folder in tact where ever you dragged it to.

    Hi,

He wont have to if he moves the folder to another location but he specifically mentions he prefers not to.

    Cheers, *Wink

How to get a desktop folder off the desktop?

If I understand it correctly then the folder would also be hidden in File Explorer, that is not my intention. I access it frequently in File Explorer because I store a lot of movies and tv shows in that folder, I only want to delete it on the desktop, if that is possible. Besides, I have configured Windows to show all the hidden folders and files. I just like a clean desktop.

Yes, that worked. I forgot that you can move (instead of copying) files like that. The icon is however still available on the desktop as an empty folder, I assume that after the next reboot it will disappear. Speaking about moving files, in W7 you have a registertweak to add "move to" to the context menu. Is that also possible for W10?

It looks nice, I am certainly going to check it out. Now I need to find a way to pick my own color for the windows (I can't get it with the 3 sliders) but I will open a different topic for that.
