Windows 10: How to get the Windows 10 Creators Update

Are the hardware issues documented anywhere as to be able to make an informed decision about manually updating?

One of the issues that has been reported has been with Bluetooth devices, specifically those using certain Broadcom chips, and then they posted about the issue and the possible fix at the Micro$oft Community forums.

 

The Media Creation Tool creates the whole new version of Windows as an ISO is that correct? Can that be used to do the upgrade or just for clean installing the new version? Is the update assistant the better way to upgrade?

 

I had downloaded the latest version of Windows ISO, i.e. Creators Update, via MCT and saved it onto a USB drive, via which I performed clean installation.

 

Can you use the ISO to do the update or is the update assistant better for that?

 

There is no significant difference between using the Upgrade Assistant or downloading the MCT and using its first option 'upgrade this PC now'. Neither option will leave you with a copy of the install media when you are done.

Most of us prefer to use the MCT's second option 'make install media for another PC' which downloads to a USB or .iso file, then from within windows run the Setup from that to do the upgrade (you can mount the .iso by double-clicking on it). That way we have the media to try again if there's a problem, upgrade other machines, or do a clean install if preferred.

Whichever way you choose the results of the upgrade will be the same, will take about the same time to finish, and download about the same amount of data.

Do you prefer to always have the latest ISO on usb, or older versions on separate sticks as well? When I used MCT last it was for the Anniversary Update version. I'm guessing I wipe that and put the Creators Update on it.

 

I hate throwing away anything *Smile For support purposes I have USBs for each version, 1703, 1607, 1511 and even the original 1503 release. Did you know that the MCT is re-released for each version? An old MCT will still make the old .iso it was released for (and, yes, I have also kept all the old MCTs).

For a more... err... conventional user than me, I would recommend keeping the 1607 iso on USB as a fall-back, should unforeseen problems emerge in 1703. In your situation I would wipe a USB for the 1511 .iso (if you have one) in order to make one with the latest .iso.

Are the older MCTs no longer available?

 

No, the MCT is updated each time a new version is released. Download the MCT today and it's the one for 1703, OS build 15063. You may want to hang on to any old ones you have. You can identify what each one is by right-clicking on it and selecting Properties. On the Details tab the version number is the same as the OS build number for the .iso it will make. These are the MCTs for 1511 (OS build 10586) and 1607 (OS build 14393).

 

Up until this point I have been running the Anniversary RS1 update on the two desktops and three laptops two upgraded from 8.1 where I was asked about an envelop a friend found on his taskbar on one of the two he and his wife owns. The envelop is present to add an email account MS or other as well as phone number for added security. MS just added in a brand Inbox for W10 to replace the old Windows Mail pinning the envelop shortcut on the taskbar as the first new item seen just today on the taskbar on the main build after getting in for the day as well as what a friend had asked about when he spotted his while paying a visit. This however is not anything MS and only those running the Stardock Start menu will now suddenly see this new addition to updated version.

You will note the green arrow as well pointing out the new item that appears a few days after the upgrade by update goes on. With the WA no worry about needing to see any clean install since while taking an hour or so by way of the tool the new build goes on without needing anything but the software for an expansion here which was the separate sound card as with every other update. The tv tuner/capture card and all else except the Start 10 app for the Start menu and button needed to be repaired but also just saw a new update for that as well go on. Under the Universal apps is where to look as well for the dark envelop shortcut that shows the location when right clicking to bring up the properites being a sub folder under the Admin user account. I have a 32-GB USB stick, where I can keep different versions if I want to.

Some of the older releases were Windows Insiders Preview builds where you had to and still have to be signed up into the Windows Insider Preview program.

Once signed up you have the open to look over the still remaining Insider builds. For the most part however either MSDN or TechNet sites would still see the collective number of builds for those with active paid for memberships.

 

Don't the ISO's require dedicated usb sticks to be bootable?
