  1. How to keep a partition icon as it should be.

Each week, I clone my system to one of four partitions on a larger drive. So these partitions get basically the same content. However the icon in Explorer for the second partition turns into one for a CDrom at every clone. I have a program that can restore the correct icon, but that is effective only till the next time I clone to that partition. How can I prevent that partition icon reverting to one for CDrom ? The phenomenon is not confined to that drive with 4 partitions. Sometimes USB stick icons also show as the one for CDrom. I've discovered that the icon gets reset at each cloning, because the correction is caused by two files which get deleted when I format the partition before cloning to it : Autorun.inf Drive.ico So that leaves the question - why does this partition 'naturally assume' the CD icon ?

    :)

    W7 Hard drive partition issue

to get rid of that 100 meg windows partition that setup creates for you on a new install on a blank hdd:

    - press shift+f10 when on the partition management screen in setup <-- this opens a command prompt
    - diskpart <-- start the windows command line partition management tool
    - list disk <--- list the installed hdds in this computer for the next step
    - select disk 0 <- might have to replace 0 with the number of the correct disk
    - clean <-- this will erase all data on the disk you selected one step up- dont use the wrong disk!
    - create partition primary <- creates a primary partition taking up all space on the drive, adjust the command if necessary
    - exit, exit to exit diskpart and the command prompt
    - click refresh in partition manager and select your newly created partition and install to that
