  1. How to read the CPU utilization values shown in Task Manager

    Hi all,

I am trying to monitor the overall CPU utilization and show it in my applicationbuilt using LabVIEW. Most of the online search suggests using performance monitor counters but the values are way off sometimes 30% difference from what is displayed in Task Manager.

I would like to understand how the Task manager computes CPU usage and is there any DLL or Command line to get that value.

    Thanks,

    Mani.

    :)

(Windows 10) Task Manager shows nearly doubled CPU speed values

    Hi,

Provide us the below information to assist you better.

    • What is the make and model of the computer?
    • Have you manually changed overclocking within BIOS settings?

The “Maximum speed” that is shown on the right is the frequency the processor advertises, as reported directly from the
processor. However processors have the ability to use “turbo” states where it can temporarily run faster than its advertised maximum. Most modern processors will do this.

In addition, different algorithms are used to measure processor speed. For example, the algorithm used by Intel in its branded maximum speed is different than the algorithm used by Task Manager to directly measure the speed of
the CPU. You can use other processor utilities, such as the Intel Processor Identification Utility or CPU-Z, for additional processor speed measurements.

So what you are seeing is likely a difference in calculation method – Windows is not running the CPU over the recommended frequency (unless you are manually overclocking the CPU within the BIOS/UEFI settings).

Also this should not impact your computer in terms of power consumption or less performance.

Get back to us if you need help on this query.

  4. How to read the CPU utilization values shown in Task Manager

task manager displays wrong cpu speed/utilization

How to read the CPU utilization values shown in Task Manager c7c25263-e12c-4ef2-bf48-26f852cb0e07.png

as can be seen, windows 10's task manager reports cpu speed as 3.26, where it is actually 4.13.

similarly, a multiplier of 28 will show a maximum cpu utilization of 80%.

the computer is running prime95, so it is definitely 100% loaded; this can be seen in various applications (e.g. intel extreme tuning utility, and many many others)

possibly the 125 bus speed is ignored? task manager seems to assume it is set to 100 in its calculations

is there a fix for this?
