Yesterday, Dec 4, I received a message purportedly from Microsoft asking permission to update my system, which I gave.

When I opened up my laptop again today, there were those usual messages "installing update 30 of ..." or something along those lines.

Tonight, I have again received an onscreen message asking me to chose a time to update my system by clicking one of THREE possibilities: Now, Tomorrow, or Indicate what time...

My question is How to know that these messages and invitation to click here or there are NOT scams?

    :)

Is this a genuine message from MS?

Yes I would say they were genuine messages from Windows 10 Update . . . the issue occurred because you removed power from your system.

This has happened to many users who like you thought it was suspicious and bricked their systems by performing a hard shut down. I feel what is needed is probably a bit more notice of some sort from Windows Update so that users know it is a genuine update

Windows 10 1709 System Restore problems...

That seems to be an attempt at Option 2 in the tutorial, which requires you to
    a. Boot to a command prompt (Did you?)
    b. You then seem to be mixing steps 3,4 and 5, thus your command is incorrect.

I suggest Option 1 is easier.

If you still have problems, please repost listing each specific step and saying which option from the tutorial you are using. Thanks.
