Yep, you have hide it that's all. I removed it, the needed reboot was 30-40 seconds and a startup was 35 seconds from Glary Utilities however they calculate it. Is MS trying to punish us for not reserving a copy by slowing our startup times?

GWX.EXE still shows up in Customize Icons! It's alive......

EDIT: Today's startup back to 3:20! *Mad

How to remove the 'Get Windows 10' app from your PC

I haven't really been following this, so please forgive my redundant question, but as a windows insider, do we need to go through this "get Windows 10" process or will our preview version upgrade to a full version? Thanks for the info.

Best icon on my taskbar in years! I'm excited and reserved it on both of my PCs! Any Windows 7 loyalist is just crazy.

Brink - first a note of thanks for your GREAT 7, 8 and 10 forums. They've been tremendously helpful over the past year.

Now, on the topic here, I just want to be sure I've done something correctly.

My Dell desktop is dual-booting Win 7 Pro SP1 64-bit and Win 8.1 Pro 64-bit.

I DO want the 8.1 to convert to 10 and I AM reserved for that - the icon shows in Win 8.1. Good.

I do NOT want the 7 to convert to 10. I want it to stay 7. So last night (while I was in 7) I UNinstalled KB3035583. But then I did a Find for all files with GWX and found many of them, in both the 8 partition and the 7 partition, including GWX.exe in various folders in both partitions.
However, this morning (and there were a few reboots between the uninstall of KB3035583 and now), there are no longer any GWX files in the 7 partition* (but still many in the 8 partition).
    Is that what you'd expect?

So is my 7 now safe when 8 upgrades to 10? Will I find myself with a dual-booting machine with 7 and 10 (both Pro 64-bit), which is what I want?
Or will the future upgrade in 8 somehow wreck my 7?

    Thanks.

    * FYI In my 7 partition, there is still an event log file dealing with GWX, with the last entry yesterday morning, before I uninstalled KB3035583 last night. But no other file or folder in 7 with "GWX".

    Hello glnz,

Since you uninstalled KB3035583 in Windows 7, you will no longer have the "Get Windows 10" (GWX) app to offer and download the free upgrade to Windows 10 in your Windows 7.

Be sure to also hide the KB3035583 update to prevent it from being automatically installed again.

The upgrade from Windows 8.1 to 10 shouldn't affect your 7 installation.

Brink - KB3035583 does NOT appear as an "Installed Update" - good - but it also does NOT re-appear, even when I "Check for Updates". I don't recall ever flagging it as "Hide". Is it lurking somewhere like a stealth drone, ready to strike when I'm snoring?

Brink - On three Win 7 SP1 64-bit machines, the Win 10 upgrade icon was NOT showing originally, and uninstalling KB3035583 caused all the various files and folders with "GWX" to disappear after maybe 15 minutes. Also, a refresh of Windows Update did NOT re-download KB3035583, and so there was no need to hide it.

HOWEVER, on a fourth Win 7 SP1 64-bit machine, the icon was there. So I first opened its window, went to the hamburger index and found the link to UNreserve the future upgrade. It confirmed it was now UNreserved. I then uninstalled KB3035583. This time, a refresh of Windows Update showed that KB3035583 would be re-downloaded, so I hid it. HOWEVER, the numerous folders and files with GWX are still there. Also, there are a few registry entries with GWX in them. These GWX items are not disappearing as they did on the first three machines.

What's the diff? Also, is the fourth machine still going to upgrade in some stealthy manner?

    Thanks.

At different times, I purchased W8 Pro 64bit OEM, and W8.1 Pro 64bit OEM, from a retail computer shop. I recently did a clean re-install on each of the original PCs using the MS ISO for W8.1 Pro 64bit for both installations; and then used the product keys from W8 and W8.1 respectively to successfully activate each installation. On one of the PCs I also have W7 Ultimate Retail installed on a separate HD, but not with dual boot ... I use the BIOS at startup to select which one will boot up.

The KB3035583 update was downloaded on all three OSs, but the GWX app icon only shows in the taskbar for the W7 OS.

Ironically I do not want to use my W7 product key to install W10, but do want one of my installations of W8.1 to be upgraded to W10 but cannot reserve an upgrade for either installation.

Can anyone help with information as to why neither installation of W8.1 will show the GWX app on the taskbar?

Could it be that all reserved copies have been used up, and if so, why is it still on offer to W7?

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the KB update. Hiding it and the un-hiding it, but all to no avail. I also checked the MS download site and FAQs, etc.
