How to use 1440p Monitor and 1080p TV as Dual Monitors

I have a 1440p Monitor on my desktop, and I run an HDMI from my GTX 970 graphics card to the 1080p TV in my living room. I do this so I can sit on the couch and watch something every now and then. The problem I am having is when I play a video game on the PC, I have to unplug the HDMI cord every time because it will automatically change resolution to 1080p. Is there a way to prevent that from happening?

    :)

    Monitor Scaling and resolution

I have a 2 monitor setup on windows 10. I have a 23.8 inch 1440p monitor, and a 31 inch 1080p television as my second monitor. In the windows display settings menu it assumes the 1080p tv is smaller than the 1440p monitor despite it being the opposite.
Is there a way to input the inches a monitor/tv is so it scales correctly? In the photo, monitor 1 is the 1440p monitor, and 2 is the 1080p television. Thanks in advance.

  3. Dual Monitor Setup issues - 4k and 1080p combination

The issue is worse than it seems at first. I have a 4k display (200%) scaling and a 1080p display (100% scaling) and even office apps look blurry on the 1080p display. If I unplug the 4k display and reboot the problem goes away. I believe the problem is
present on all apps and is a system issue. It's been suggested that to get the 100% scaling everything on both monitors is generated at 200% and then the part on the 1080p display is downsampled to 100%, resulting in the poor quality.

As it is Windows 10 is almost unusable with a very different DPI dual monitor setup.

How to use 1440p Monitor and 1080p TV as Dual Monitors

    1440P or 4K

High on my wish list is the BenQ GW2765 HT which is 1440p and ips, the same size as my LG M2762D, a 1080p tv/monitor. I feel that the 4K monitors may suffer from text size problems in this size range as Bobkn has mentioned.
