Windows 10: How will Microsoft Distribute Non-Upgrade Non-OEM Windows 10?

MS has some highly paid employees working on how to get a copy of Win10 to me as rapidly as possible because they don't get paid until I have my install media. They're sweating. *Biggrin I'm not. *chuckle

 

With W10 to be free for the first year to all W7 and W8 users I do not think they will be doing much sweating.

 

I'll bet the new computer I'm going to build someday that will never happen.
Hell, let's have the Geek-Squad install all new installs when Win10 is released.

Well I followed Jeff's advice and installed build 10049 from a ISO that I made from an ESD download. Thanks to @Kari for that tut and everyone else involved with it. So now I have 1049 on one hard drive 1056 on another and Windows 7 on a third. I think I have everything covered.

Of course . . . even imagining Microsoft would ever allow ​either scenario is silly.

I know, I know, I know! We could have it distributed by Ten Forums and anyone who didn't have a way to download would put their name in the pot and someone would mail them a DVD. Hey, it could happen . . . *Smile

 

So you're saying that the only possibility is that they'll offer a DVD for sale? So what was the point of your thread again?

We discussed this at the last MVP Summit (Nov 2014), and that's the gist of it - they have some highly placed people working on the specifics of it. You'll see some evidence of possible scenarios in the Win10 preview downloads, but the final plans are still under wraps. Also, the marketing people still have to put their twist on it also - so we won't know until we're told.

 

I would support this approach; I have stacks of unused dvd's in a cupboard - since I use usb flash or surplus hard-drives in caddies and have not burnt a dvd in last 3 years. Cost would be marginal say postage plus 1$.

 

Buying retail only would cause MS warranty hell with OEM purchased devices still under warranty. MS would suddenly have to support thousands of graphics cards when they didn't write the drivers.

Well first of all the OEM concept would be eliminated. Up to now if you buy an OEM machine that OEM is in charge of supporting that device both with hardware and OS. If you buy OEM OS from say Newegg you are on you own for support. If you buy the Retail version MS will support the software. Even when MS released a new version of it's OS they offered the new OS fro free if you bought a machine within 60 of the new OS release. You signed up on a website for all Windows users but you were handled by the OEM and you received the new media from the OEM not MS.
