Windows 10: HP dv7-4171US Video Drivers problem

Ok well I stand corrected. This laptop has a secondary GPU integrated into the chipset... Out of curiosity under system devices in device manager is there any AMD chipset controllers listed?

 

No, there is not

 

I am unsure if the 8 series is included in the 15.7.1 chipset package, but download the chipset drivers found here, and see if they install. If it's successful system devices should show some AMD 8 series blah blah, if not it shouldn't even let you finish running the installer.

Basically this is what's going on right now. HP (and other vendors) modify amd/nvidia/intel drivers and include extras for their laptops (things like the brightness up/down keys for instance, or in your case, your dual GPU/chipset conglomeration). When you update to the latest drivers, you get increased performance but lose those features. In your case I don't think you will be able to successfully update without borking your machine.

IF the 15.7.1 chipset drivers install properly, you may then also be able to go up to the 15.7.1 graphics drivers for the 5470. If not, you are stuck using the old driver.

I installed the chipset drivers from the link you posted. I still did not get any AMD entries under system devices but I am now able to get the second display to work. However it only works if I boot the laptop without the display attached.

 

Honestly the only thing I can think of to try now is to see if the 15.7.1 Graphics drivers will take now that the 15.7.1 chipset drivers are in. I am unsure if the installer will be able to differentiate between the "2" GPUs though. If you install the latest and the 4250 suddenly stops working or reports no driver, then its back to DDU and reinstalling the chipset driver/hp graphics driver. After that you could try to force it to only install for the 5470 by right clicking on its properties in device manager, clicking update driver, and then manually selecting the 15.7.1 driver package.

Honestly I don't know if you'll ever get it 100% the way you want, HP hasn't made a driver release for it since windows 7 and going up to 10 from 7 on older hardware usually creates a little messiness like this even though amd "supports" this device for 10, plus amd seems to have poor driver support for this odd switchable business I mean most "Switchable" graphics are typically an intel iGPU and an AMD/Nvidia dGPU, but are 2 separate physical graphics adapters. Yours is an AMD dGPU and another i guess dGPU built into the chipset which is weird as hell.
