  1. Huge issues with Windows 10 sleep mode....

    Hello all…

I have a brand new custom built Lenovo Windows 10 64-bit machine (Windows installed fresh – not an upgrade). My system consists of an Intel(R) I7-6400K CPU with 64 Gigs of RAM.

Here is my dilemma and it wasn’t until recently that I discovered that this was the issue. As a matter of background info, I’ve always had a habit of putting my PC to sleep, rather than just turning it off while I’m away from the unit. I may, during the course of the day, put it to sleep and bring it back up again several. In the past, with previous windows versions, I’ve never had any issues regarding PC performance after I brought them out of sleep mode – that is until now. Please read on…

But now, after I bring my PC out of sleep mode, a number of strange things occur and they are:

    1. Certain programs won’t load: – What’s unusual is that now certain programs won’t load right away – i.e. some chromium based browsers, a few email programs, and some other minor programs – all of which won’t load if I try to bring them up. Yet when I bring up the task manager, it clearly shows those programs running in the background. I then have two choices and they are either to close them using control/alt/delete, or to allow them to just sit there running in the background. If I allow them to just sit there, usually within 30 minutes to an hour, they magically load – now go figure. Of course, if I reboot the PC, everything works just fine again (all programs load swiftly). It’s only when I put my PC to sleep and then bring it out of sleep mode that these issues occur. Read on…

    2. Can’t do Windows Update: Another strange issue is after bringing the PC out of sleep mode, is that I can’t do a windows update. When I bring up the windows update window, it is blank. Yes, the left column has words in them (i.e. Windows Update, Windows Defender, etc), but you can’t click on any of them – and there’s nothing in the right column allowing you to do the windows update check. In some cases that entire window may crash after a few seconds. Again, only after I do a reboot does everything work.

    3. Reboots take much longer: Another strange scenario that occurs is when I want to restart my PC. After putting it to sleep and reawakening the system (whether once or several times), when I click on the “Restart PC” button, the system then remains almost 2-3 minutes in the light blue screen that says “restarting” before actually going through the reboot process. But if I never had the system in sleep mode (and just left it on), a reboot is quick and painless.

I’ve looked into everything – in particular, my Firewall and Anti-virus settings. Nothing there shows them blocking anything. My Firewall is Zone Alarm and my anti-virus is AVG.

So I don’t know where to turn. I’ve never had this issue in any previous versions of windows – that’s for sure.

Is this a Windows 10 bug that needs to be addressed, or is it something else?

Until I can find the answers to this, I will just leave it on during the day and shut it off during the night.
Thanks in advance for any help or guidance you can provide…

    :)

Huge issues with Windows 10 sleep mode....

Hi benherrmann and welcome to Tenforums.

Have you tried turning off Fast Startup?

To understand what this is/does (it was first introduced in Windows 8):
“Fast Startup (aka: hybrid boot or hybrid Shutdown) is a new feature in Windows 8 to help your PC start up faster after shutting down. When turned on, Windows 8 does this by using a hybrid shutdown (a partial hibernate) method that saves only the kernel session and device drivers (system information) to the hibernate (hiberfil.sys) file on disk instead of closing it when you shut down your PC. This also makes the hiberfil.sys file to be much smaller than what hibernate would use (often 4GB or more). When you start your PC again, Windows 8 uses that saved system information to resume your system instead of having to do a cold boot to fully restart it. Using this technique with boot gives a significant advantage for boot times, since reading the hiberfile in and reinitializing drivers is much faster on most systems (30-70% faster on most systems tested). If you have a motherboard with UEFI, then fast startup will be even faster.”

I would also uninstall any unnecessary Lenovo bloatware.
