I am experiencing the green ribbon of death for the first time

I got a brand new laptop a couple months ago (Dell I558 with Windows 10) and am experiencing the green ribbon of death. It only started happening in the past two weeks when I plug in a new 2tb external which is almost full now (got it a month ago). What do I need to check to alleviate this problem? the only other solution I can see is turning off thumbnails in file explorer but I'd rather not do that. Thanks!

I also had a question that I just need some assurance on. So I managed to import a couple of HD videos onto my 2tb external while the green ribbon of death was happening with it and upon restarting and checking to see if the file might have corrupted in the process, everything seems normal to me for now. So is it possible to still transfer files while the green ribbon is still going without any errors?

    :)

    Hi,

To assist you better, provided us with the following information:

    • Where did you get your MS Word free trial from?
    • In what exact date did you download the MS Word trial?

    Looking forward to your response.

I am not an expert on this but I believe it is quite safe to leave the green ribbon slowly working its way along the top of File Explorer. Sometimes it can take over 45mins on a full 2TB drive especially if there are any ownership or security issues as can sometimes happen if you have backups from other PCs on there.

If it persists after completing one of these successfully it would be worth running the error checking routine on it to see if it finds anything. (This is found by right clicking the drive and selecting Properties and Tools.)
