  1. I do not want any automatic updates from Microsoft

I'm here in Scotland with a simple question, how can I stop automatic updates from Microsoft? Mainly the OS, but all really. I understand MS may have concerns regarding security but I choose to use Webroot, and I'm not sure MS is just upgrading a system, I feel there are other areas being assessed.

I understand Office 365 continually tweaked but I should be able to sit in my own little cocoon, everything in the same place, and more importantly, working. Not having to regularly jump onto some Community site, with respect to figure out why something else is buggy. When the smoke settles, it might be time to upgrade.

Yes, I am mid 50's, so just after a simple solution. If I choose to drive a BMW - I have Surface - OK, you're right, more a Ford, I do not expect to have to Google when BMW/Ford have put the steering wheel in the back seat, as part of an imposed Automatic Upgrade, for what ever reason.

I think most people have given up jokin about Win 8 but having the upgrade regime may have MS looking for the last laugh. Bottom line, can/should this be legally forced on customers that have supported MS since Win 3, also with 95, XP or 7?

    Any thoughts appreciated.

    Vista Automatic Updating Error

    Resolution Suggestion:

    # To resolve this problem, make sure that BITS and the Automatic Updates service are started..

A simple solution but one that works in most circumstances!

    1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.

    2. In the list of services, right-click Automatic Updates, and then click Properties.

    3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.

    4. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.

    5. Right-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and then click Properties.

    6. In the Startup type list, click Manual, and then click Apply.

    7. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.
