    I Don't like Windows Ten.

I've always perceived myself as an early-adopter. Back in the previous century I installed Windows 2000 on my first Fujitsu laptop as soon as it had become available and I loved it. Having worked with XP for several years I just could not wait for the 7 to arrive. It landed on my ThinkPad the very first day after commercial launch and it's still there, untouched, never reinstalled, loaded with stuff and rock stable.

I visited the 8.x but was quickly repelled by its awkwardness for a desktop-oriented IT professional that I am.

Then came the Insider program for Windows 10. It looked really promising, getting rid of the awkward parts of 8.x, deepening touch-oriented optimisation and (supposedly) bringing more uniform experience across all device formats. My excitement grew with each new build as the system matured, stabilised and was getting more and more polish.

When The Day came, I made a clone of my production 7 in a separate partition and upgraded to build 10240. After a few hours of tweaking (removing obsolete Lenovo stuff, updating drivers, etc.) my shining new 10 was ready. After that, the more I am using it the less I like it. I am really trying to convince myself to what MS sells as the best Windows ever, but each day and each task it deserves less and less to be called Professional.

It represents the philosophy "MS knows better". The new "Setings" are dumb and stripped of many vital items. To make things worse, traditional Control Panel and even "God Mode" were stripped too. There's very limited control over networks (gone is renaming, merging and changing profile, which I do frequently being a roaming user). There is almost no control over updates (to be honest, the "Show and Hide" diagcab is rubbish).

One could argue that there is Power Shell to deal with that. Heck! My productivity is elsewhere, I am not getting paid for spending time programming my own stuff for tasks that used to be just there.

I got used to hibernating my W7 instead of shutting it down and I have uptimes lasting weeks without restart and I usually restart my 7 only when required by updates. In Windows 10 it takes AGES to resume from hibernation. Bear in mind that both instances are nearly identical, with 10 having slightly less software installed.

Networking in W7 works flawlessly, while it has some hiccups and limps in W10.

Mouse wheel does not scroll modern (universal) apps, including Edge and settings. Annoying like hell. It could be the Synaptics driver. It was demoted to one version back, as the Windows 10 version does not retain settings and reverts to defaults upon each login

On the upside - there is much better support for multiple monitors in W10 and there's Hyper-V. I like the Hello concept, with native support for biometrics such as fingerprint reader.

I'll give Windows 10 a go for a few more days and then I'll probably dump it in favour of my good old Windows 7. I'll stay insider anyway - to give MS another shot and see what they'll come up with later this year

I am really loving Windows 10 so far. There are a few glitches... I tend to check the event logs regularly to see what is going and there are certainly some issues for Microsoft to tweak with updates, but overall the experience is better and faster than Windows 8.1.
I did have a heart in mouth moment when I had to do a clean install and by accident completely deleted the partitions on my SSD drive! Very pleased that a simple DISKPART process solved the issue and the fresh install went fine (and quick).

I do think MIcrosoft will quite quickly update the Mail and Calendar apps - it seems strange that functionality like disabling conversation view (which I hate) seems to be gone. I, like a lot of people, use the metro app for personal (or secondary) email and Outlook for exchange services and primary email addresses. Its no good making Mail so 'light' thats its hard to use.

  5. yeah i'm loving windows 10 so far actually and i've been pretty hardcore on 7. i finally found a background changer for the login got rid of that ugly windows hero wallpaper. and I have found 2 modification for the title bar i made them grayish black more like windows 7. one is a theme aerolite and the other is a modify a theme. so looks wise its coming together for me. wish i could change my boot logo like 7 i'm sure that will come along eventually. and cant wait for the service release 1 to come hoping alot of bugs get fixed then i will install it on my desktop. the only other thing i found annoying was the main things i had to turn off to make windows more private its like send this to Microsoft and send that and all the other privacy things i'm sure there more modication i will have to do for that as well.

    OK Gang,
From one who is usually very critical of Microsoft. I got the message the download was ready. I clicked on the OK to start. A black screen came up, I waited for ten minutes and forced a shut down. Evidently Microsoft saves that information. The next time I booted up a large screen came up stating the download for Windows 10 was ready. I took a chance and pressed OK. It started right away. They have a cute way they do it, very relaxing. The only thing is it takes a very long time, so be very patient. Also at the end the screen went dark, nothing else, no message to wait. My mouse was still there, the computer was on, it hadn't been shut down. After an hour I forced it to shut down and rebooted. It came up and is great. I was worried about loosing all my icons on the screen, they all came up. I was worried about my Norton and Malwarbytes, they both worked very well. My only suggestion to Microsoft is tell us when the download is completed, don't leave us sitting there for an hour. Also, be sure and right click the start button to get to all the back stage items from Windows 7. Have fun.

I like the hero background for the login screen, in fact, I'm using one of the other default wallpapers for my desktop right now... even though all my old backgrounds came through during the upgrade. I like the nice HD quality of the default wallpapers.

  11. I guess its all in the taste but for me no thanks I rather have a plain color for the login screen even my wallpaper i always change it. i don't need some background with windows logo i know i'm using windows thanks for showing me desktop and login screen lol. i'll stick to me anime hd girl wallpaper soothing to my eyes. and with my login screen change and lock screen which there is a possible way to remove useless for a laptop and desktop i have a FOXHOUND special ops theme going on. its great when i'm doing my job and people see that on my laptop there like foxhound special forces government lol

Thanks darkschneider94 appreciate the links. Also, your choice of background jogged me, because my middle son is an airborne Ranger (75th) and has been deployed for the last 13 years. The Rangers will provide my logo. Thanks again

I mentioned the improved visuals elsewhere, and your reply must be right, the HD has improved immensely. Even some of my old games have shown a visual improvement.

Windows 10 does absolutely nothing to improve image quality in games like that. Maybe you got newer drivers during the install for your video chipset.
