I have an external hard drive that was used for Dish Satellite recording and I want to reformat it and use it on my computer but my computer doesn't see it anymore. What do I do?

I used my external hard drives to transfer movies between Dish receivers. I know it reformatted the drive to do this. Now when I reconnect to my Windows laptop I cannot see it in File Explorer. Is my external hard drive now Dish only? How do I get
it back to Windows format?

Hi Rich,

You may not be able to view your files from your external hard drive in the File Explorer due to digital copy protection of your provider. For your reference, you may follow the steps below to format your hard drive:

• Open Computer Management. Click on the Start button and
  right-click on Computer or My Computer.
• Select Disk Management. This is located in the left frame, listed underneath Storage.
  
• Right-click the drive you want to format. From the right-click menu, select
  Format.
• Select the File System.
• Click on OK.

Note: After the format process, Windows will recognize your external hard drive; however, all files that are saved on your hard drive will be deleted.

We suggest that you try the troubleshooting steps below:

• Open your External Hard Drive file in File Explorer.
• Type the name of the file you want to search on the search box and click Enter.

The file will show up in Search Results and you will be able to move it to the correct folder.
