Windows 10: I have plenty of disk space but it says disk is full

I'm trying to download a file that is just short of 1gb from firefox. I select it to open with winrar so i can just drag the file where i want it to go. I try to save it to my disk drive that has 1.61 tb free to use. And yet is says that it cannot download because the disk is full. The only disk i have full is my original hard drive, but that shouldnt matter because im sending it to my secondary hard drive, right? please help

EDIT: i cleared up space in my primary hard drive and it worked, i would still like to know why it did this for future reference.

side note: i have changed the download location in firefox to my secondary hard drive

Try to run theSystem Maintenance Troubleshooter.

  Press Windows key + W and type
  Troubleshooting.
  
• 
  Select Troubleshooting.
  
• 
  Select view all on the top left corner.
  
• 
  Click System Maintenance,
  follow onscreen instructions.
  

I suggest you to run Check Disk which performs an analysis of the disk. Refer to the steps below:

• Press Windows key + X.
• Click on Command prompt (Admin).
• Type chkdsk /f and hit enter.

Taking into consideration that the free space is shrinking fast, it is possible that your system is creating restore points. To
delete restore points except for the recent one, simply follow the steps below:

• From the Cortana search box, type Disk Cleanup and click on the first result.
• Once the Disk Cleanup window appears, select the
  More Options tab.
• Under the System Restore and Shadow Copies column, click on the
  Clean up... button.

Once done with the steps, see if your disk space has expanded.
