I Need Help Integrating Ubuntu 18.04 With Windows 10

    Hello All,
I am not very familiar with Hyper V but I am trying to integrate the newest Insider's build of Windows 10 with the beta version of Ubuntu 18.04 that was released on March 8th. I have not been successful. Has anybody done this and can anybody give me some tips?

    Installing Windows 10 alongside Ubuntu?

I have already made a reservation for Windows 10, but I'm wondering what'll happen to other partitions when it's time to install Windows 10?

I am currently dual-booting Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 14.04 through GRUB2, and I fear the installation of Windows 10 may wipe Ubuntu's partitions (I have Ubuntu installed through multiple partitions) and/or render it unbootable. I already expect the installation
to wipe or replace GRUB2 to make Windows 10 boot by default, but I'm pretty sure that's fixable. However, I don't want it to delete Ubuntu as a whole, since I still need to use it for work, etc.

I'm already making backups of everything I need from Ubuntu in case anything goes wrong, but I still need to ask. How will the installation work on a machine dual-booting Windows and Ubuntu?

I Need Help Integrating Ubuntu 18.04 With Windows 10

I run Win10RTM, Win10IP and Linux Mint 18.2 [a version of Ubuntu] all on separate computers. The only "tip" I can think of is trying the VM and Linux on a Win10 RTM machine, not a BETA version of Linux on a BETA version of Windows, neither is really "ready for prime time".

Thank you for responding to my thread but maybe you misunderstood my request. For the new beta version of Microsoft's integration feature, a person must be running an Insider version of Windows 10 AND the beta version of Ubuntu 18.04. That is the only way to try out this new beta feature of Windows. In other words, this new beta feature of Windows is not included in with the current retail version of Windows 10, it is only being tested in the newest Insider version of Windows 10.

On the Canonical side, the code is only available in the beta version of Bionic Beaver, it is not part of any other version of Ubuntu.

    But thanks for your reply.

Firstly, I have used that link and installed the test version which is 16.04 - 18.04 is not yet ready.

It will not works on Insider versions.

Having tested it, it is rather disappointing as it does not allow sound still.

You can resize window at startup provided you do not save config file. You can edit config file to change size easily though.

In basic mode, you can change size by editing a linux config file but rather more hassle.

It supports cut and paste from host. That worked well.

The bit that is badly bugged is the drive thin client redirection that does not work properly. I get same issue as reported on github.

So really apart from cut and paste, and slightly easier screen resizing, the enhanced mode is pretty useless until the drive integration is fixed - then intrgrating sound would be a major plus.

Thanks cerebus. Even though this new feature is much hyped up in the news, after fully exploring it I can say that it is much-ado-about-nothing. I much prefer the speed and simplicity of VirtualBox.

    Thanks again.

I Need Help Integrating Ubuntu 18.04 With Windows 10

    Hi @Rocky
I prefer VMware but that's a matter of personal choice plus I have the latest version of VMware workstation Free supplied to me from Work.

Using Linux(pretty well any distro) as a VM on a Windows host IMO is better run using either VMware or Vbox rather than HYPER-V (sorry @Kari) as they will work pretty seamlessly out of the box and there's often no trouble in getting things like USB's and sound working. Remember though to install VMware tools or Vbox additions ON THE GUEST after ist boot. These improve video and audio displays plus fix random problems with mice and keyboards.

If you have problems with either of these (VBOX additions or VMware tools depending on what virtualisation program you are using) you can instead install open-vm tools on mots Linux distros which also does the job.

I tend to run Windows though as a VM from a Linux host as I use a Linux box as a server and Internet gateway - prefer Linux any day of the week for SERVER use -- Windows is fine for typical desktop use and for people using special eseoteric hardware though. I do have a Windows Laptop with a Linux VM on it - no problems at all with VMware. !!

It's easy also running multiple LINUX VM's on a Linux host as the OS is fairly tiny and not as much overhead as a Windows VM.

You can also improve I/O significantly on any VM (whether Windows or Linux) by using RAW (i.e physical) HDD's rather than as "Virtual Disks". I tend to have a small VHD for booting up the VM and then if I have spare HDD capacity use those as RAW HDD's so the VM can use the Native file systems rather than have the HOST to do conversions from VM file system to Host one.

I also have quite a few portable self powered USB drives formatted XFS or EXT4 which work far better on a Linux VM than using FAT32 or NTFS from Windows shared with the VM. Also Linux doesn't have the problem - still not fixed in Windows of Long directory + file names --with multi-media directories I've run up against the Windows limitation several times.

    Cheers

jimbo, Thanks a lot for that very detailed and informative post. I am messing around with VirtualBox on both a Linux host and a Windows host, but I have never had a chance to try to VMWare. I have been using VirtualBox for a few years now and I have grown accustom to the way it works so I will probably stick with VB.

I really wanted to try the functionality of Hyper-V only because I am an Insider and I felt that it was my duty to try out all of the features that Microsoft works towards providing. I tried it and I was not impressed.

On the same premise, I always try out Edge because I want to give Microsoft a chance to prove itself to me. I am always very disappointed with Edge because the basic functionality is just not there, it crashes regularly on my system which is something that Opera and Firefox never do.

Thanks again for your great post, there is some good info that you gave me that I can surely use.
