Windows 10: I seem to have no option for Automatic downloading of updates

Discus and support I seem to have no option for Automatic downloading of updates in Windows 10 Updates and Activation to solve the problem; Does anyone have this screen or is it just an older version of Advanced Options? The Advanced Options on my 1607 does not have that screen. Discussion in 'Windows 10 Updates and Activation' started by dortmunder, Mar 28, 2017.

That looks like the screen from version 1511 (or earlier). Run Winver to confirm what version you have. If Winver doesn't give a version number, then it's the original release 10240.

Restart options changed to 'Active hours' - during which your PC will not restart.
Limited to 12 hours in build 1607, this should change to 18 hours in the Creators Upgrade.

That should offer more control, but may enforce downloading critical updates even over metered connections.

One can easily question MS's thinking- they clearly want products uniformly updated. However, not every update goes smoothly as you can see from this forum. Having set my PC to notify, I never had an uncontrolled restart.

    @dortmunder

The screen for Creator's Update will look like this:

And the control over active hours and notification of restart will look like this:

note the extension of the time from 12 hours to 18 hours.

Just a heads up so you'll know what to expect.

@f14tomcat - have they kept the Defer feature updates option? It looks as though that's been superseded...

I just checked the Release Preview I updated yesterday from 14393>15063. I can't find anything in Updates & Security, or anywhere else about Defer Feature. Unless it's really hiding somewhere. Seems that's an option for Enterprise, which I don't have. Found a reference to it here: What Does “Defer Upgrades” in Windows 10 Mean?

"Some Windows 10 editions let you defer upgrades to your PC. When you defer upgrades, new Windows features won’t be downloaded or installed for several months. Deferring upgrades doesn’t affect security updates. Note that deferring upgrades will prevent you from getting the latest Windows features as soon as they’re available."

    - I have it in Pro - and - guess what- I'm going to use it this time until the next major update after the Creator's Upgrade... *Biggrin

Not that I expect huge issues personally, but we've seen what happened for some previously.

So the absence of such a feature would mean a different solution for the next upgrade...

Seems MS's strategy is increasingly to force users to keep up to date, despite some remarkable failures.

Thanks for all the assistance and suggestions. After this post, I'll be hitting the 'Solved' button as I now know how to change the WU settings (insomuch as they can be changed...). This is one of Winaero's webpages:
    http://winaero.com/blog/how-to-disab...indows-10-rtm/

Scroll down to Method 2 and there you have it. As he says, the essential bit is to Check for Updates after you make your selection from the options 2, 3, 4 or 5. They don't all do what they say – option 5 is no longer 'Allow local admin to choose setting', it's auto download/auto install.

I know that Winaero's Tweaker is supposed to do the same thing but, as you'll see from previous posts in this thread, you have to get the right combination of clicks which does not appear to be easy...

It's a shame that Win10 didn't retain more of the good bits of Win7 but I've made the move now and am happy with it. Thanks again to you all.

  9. It's obvious that it didn't do so due to the following strategy:

@dortmunder - you may feel happier if you use Classic Shell start menu (free) - it behaves properly and as you'd expect. It will feel very familiar coming from Win 7, and is highly configurable in style, appearance and function, supports drag 'n drop, can also launch universal apps, customise the start button (mine's Win 7's orb) and expand in columns across the screen if you wish.

Whereas Win 10's start menu garbles sub-sub folders in the start menu, extracting their content in an alphabetised list - so I have Help Help Help Help.... in some cases, where each Help is from a different program's shortcut folder.

  11. I have been using Classic Start Menu happily since I discovered it.

  12. Thanks. I'd been thinking about a Win7 style start menu but I want to try Win10 for a decent amount of time first. I have a (no doubt unfounded) aversion to loading too many hacks and mods. The only one I've installed so far is OldNewExplorer as I can't bear not having the Details Pane along the bottom of the screen (one of the 'good things' I alluded to earlier). I'm managing fine with the W10 start menu but I'll bear Classic in mind...

You got me thinking...looked at my lappy running 14393 Pro, and it is there! Tucked between "Give me updates ............." and "Use my sign in .............".

Oldnewexplorer is much more of a hack than Classic Shell, which only uses the relevant folders, and is readily uninstallable. It hooks into nothing.
