I think I need to get a new WIFI network card but need advice

Hi everybody, I have an old laptop which has a Intel Centrino Wireless-N 100. with Windows 10 Home Recently, the WIFI keeps getting lost continuously and only returns after running trouble shooter. The message always says that "The Default Gateway isn't available" After running different tests and doing things suggested on Youtube (only from professional people), it still happens. I spoke to a technician I used to know (it was nice speaking to him after some time) anyway he said that probably the WIFI adaptor card is on it's way to microchip heaven and that the bottom line was to change it. So my question is what one? He said about USB and internal but I have no idea. Any help would be gratefully received.

    :)

New House Build - Networking Advice

Hello TPU, it's been a while.

So, I'm in the fortunate position of being able to build a new house. And want your advice about how to structure my network.

All rooms will be wired to CAT-6 (probably two ports per room, plus extras for media/TV and office). That will all come back to an appropriate switch in either the garage (where the network enters the house) or office.

WiFi though I am torn about whether to:
    • have a single wifi/router placed centrally in the house, distributing the interwebs back to the switch
    • have a router near the switch + two wifi access points at either end of the house
What do you guys think? What would be your ideal set-up (although I don't have an infinite budget or very sophisticated knowledge of networking)?

  3. New Network Card, No WiFi

A two-hour call with Dell convinced them that my network card was failing, so the next day a tech installed a new card. No matter what I have done, no matter what a support agent did during a four-hour phone call, this new card will not find my local WiFi network, it will not even find a network I set up in the DSL modem.

I finally convinced Dell to provide, on a one-time basis, a second card, but today, they cancelled the order on the blatantly incorrect basis that our ISP was at fault. I had the ISP check, no problems found. My wife's computer is connected to WiFi, as is the printer; as part of my testing, I disconnected the router from the DSL modem, and could still print from her computer. (Why a DSL modem with WiFi and a router? I had the router set up when the previous DSL modem failed, so set up the new modem and connected it to the router, rather than entering all the MAC addresses, etc., in the new modem.)

I have read numerous ways of fixing the problem. While I am not sure of everything that the agent on the four-hour call did, I believe that she did some of the tricks of refreshing various Windows components, etc. I have run out of things to try, have more or less exhausted the on-line suggestions, etc., and have sent a detailed email to Dell outlining why it appears to me that the only thing that does not work is the new card's ability to find and use WiFi.

Next, other than applying my ten-pound sledge hammer? I even started Windows in Safe Mode with Networking, only to find that the WiFi card cannot be loaded there-and on, and on, and I'm tired, frustrated, and any assistance offered would, of course, be appreciated.

New House Build - Networking Advice

Regarding first point: Make sure you use CAT-6a.

Regarding second point:I had similar dillema recently in my refurb.
Separate router and APs a are definitely a better solution. Just think about the fact the these days, ISP providers will usually force you to use a set-top box type of device that you may have to place in your living room (i it includes TV controls for example)
