@Pluto46 - you've too many Recovery partitions. You may need to delete the ones that aren't used. (Whether that's what causing the upgrade to fail I can't be certain though, of course).

Also I recommend creating some 500Mb unallocated space on your system drive (which the above should achieve).

I'd also want to see your disk layout as viewed e.g. by Minitool Partition Wizard, please, as that shows a partition Disk Management won't.

(To work out which Recovery partition is used you need these commands from an admin command prompt:
    BCDEDIT
    REAGENTC /info
    )

Those recovery partitions appeared today I think. I was surprised by how many there were. I don't look at it very often though. I'll get hold of that partition wizard in a bit.

How do I know which recovery partition is in use?

    - you play 'match the numbers' between the reports and so identify the partition.

After reading all your suggestions about tutorials and MS docs, I think the only way to repair the disk and show 3 partitions as needed, is to start over with a reinstall and a clean / blank /wiped disk. I then should be able to also switch to UEFI.
My motherboard did not give me the same abbreviation, but called it either EFI or UEF, I forgot witch.
I am assuming that is the same as UEFI?
What do you think? or is there another way to do it?
    Thanks
    Sven

A clean install would be best, unplug all those other drives.

After that, go into Updates & Security, Advanced Options, and choose to Defer Feature updates.

If it won't take you too long to rebuild your configuration, a clean install with the Creator's edition would be the most straightforward option. You can then use GPT disk format and an EFI install if your BIOS supports UEFI.

Make sure you've got a good data backup first. A good way to do that is to create a disk image. Disk images can be mounted and files retrieved.

If you create an appropriate disk image, you can still restore what you have now.

If you clean install, the first thing to do once your system boots ok is to start routine disk imaging, and e.g. use Macrium Reflect (free) + external storage, option Backup, Windows Backup to create your first base image.

Even if your disk fails or your PC becomes unbootable you should then be able to get your PC back up and running without technical help.

Not sure if this is what you got, but, I had this pop up every 30 minutes, I hit 'Snooze' and deleted the $Windows.-BT folder with Disk Cleanup and haven't been bothered since.

    - sounds like a BSOD

    - but I do recall that some found deleting files or folders created on C: like that allowed them to complete the upgrade

There are pictures of a UEFI install of Windows 10 in my album, 1 of Disk Management and 1 of Partition Wizard, it will show you the partition layout.

    Edwin,
yes that is what I go and I did the same as you, hit Snooze

    dalchina,

I looked at my bios and the book that came with my motherboard, and I can only find 1 reference about UEFI and it is:
EFI CD/DVD Boot Option. I don't think that has anything to do with uefi. perhaps my MB is not capable of UEFI
Maybe somone knows the MB is GA-78LMT-S2P

I will not be able to redo my system in the foreseeable future, so I will hit Snooze till I can change it.
It will have to be a legacy install again, unless I can find a BIOS upgrade.
    Thanks for your help
    Sven

You can set Active Hours to limit the restart; if you have Pro, Defer feature updates. (That's assuming both those still apply at this point).

If you wanted to try the upgrade again, you could delete the added files on C: related to the failed update, and to shrink C:, do that using Minitool Partition Wizard - you might find you need to boot from a Partition Manager boot disk (you could use Kyhi's, available from the top of the software and Apps section - very useful). Then observe precautions as noted and try again. Best to do this manually and download the iso once.

Anyway, hope it works out whichever you do.

I have 3 PCs and on 2 I did a clean install because I switched them over to SSD which upgraded them by way of the media creation tool to version 1703 but on the 3rd PC which still has a HDD I got what Edwin posted and like you I also hit snooze.

Then the other day it popped up again and I let it install the update but on the first 2 trys is came up with an error code of 0x80070020 so after researching that I came to the conclusion that I needed to disable WD and then it upgraded just fine!
