    Hi all,
I just did what munk1955 did, I disabled windows defender and it installed just fine. I have not tested every thing yet, because it is late, but all looks good so far

Here are the screenshots of the command prompt exercise:

    and the Minitool Partition Wizard

Note that OS disk is disk 2. Disk 1 is for My documents and other related stuff. They're both ssds.

Funnily enough I had an old version of Minitool Partition Wizard (version 8) in my download files - can't remember when I used it, though.

Ok,, the system partition must be the 128Mb one.

Now before you do anything more, please make sure you have a full disk image of your system disk. You may easily do something that may have serious consequences attempting the following.

From your reagent info you can see Partition 5 is the Recovery partition in use.

You can thus use the DISKPART command to (very carefully) delete recovery partitions you don't need. Or- see below- you may use your partition manager to do this.

Here's mine for example- two recovery partitions. From reagentc /info I know partition 5 is my active recovery partition.

Thus you can use the DELETE option to delete the ones you don't want. Consult HELP for more.

(Note: at the command prompt level, the partition number is used. However, partition manager programs don't seem to use this, nor the volume id's, so it seems you can't directly correlate the two. It would however seem reasonable to think the partitions are listed in the same order by the partition manager as the partition numbers.

    - it seems they are. But note designations Disk 1 & 2 are swapped between the two)

Now, turning to your next attempt to upgrade, I recommend you try the very basic suggestion of disabling or uninstalling any AV and retrying the upgrade, preferably manually (download the iso and create a bootable Win 10 disk).

OK, thanks for this, Dalchina. Must say it's surprising to get such detailed and knowledgeable help on forum sites in general. I'm used to people offering suggestions who clearly haven't a clue what they're talking about. So you're absolutely the most helpful guy I've come across in my 20-odd years mucking around with computers and Windows etc.

Anyway, I'm up to my ears in work at the mo, and probably won't have time to study what you've suggested until later.

By the way, I may as well use the opportunity to ask another unrelated question. I think it's got something to do with refreshing times. For example, if I right-click on a file and choose 'rename', the file name window becomes editable. Let's say I want to change 10 file names from CD1 to CD 01, etc. When I'm done with the first file, I press the tab key to open the next file name for editing. The name is marked in dark blue to indicate 'ready to edit'. Since I only want to edit part of the name, I press 'home' to take me to the beginning of the name. The blue colour disappears, and I can make the changes I want. But often I can't because the computer/Windows or whatever suddenly refreshes itself, and the whole name is coloured again. If I don't notice this happening, the changes I make affect the whole name, not just the parts I wanted to change. Then I have to go through the process again to get how I want it to be.

Be easier to upload a video, I suppose, but I don't think I have the software for that. It's no big deal, though, so there's no reason to spend time on it. It's just irritating. And I know others have the same problem.

Right clicking and file explorer crashing is most usually due to shell extension (badly written or incompatible program).
Diagnose using a range of tools to disable them (no logoff needed) such as
    Shellexview, Shellmenuview, Autoruns (All free).

Take care to back up the registry before using and do NOT disable MS items.

    Yes you did,
but after all the talk about my SSD was not setup properly, no recovery drive, I did this more out of desperation because I wanted to get rid if the nag screen. What I noticed just now is that my old windows 7 games, like Solitaire and Hearts where gone. I did install then again and they work fine. no other problems detected, so far.
    Thanks for your help

I too had this problem just today. System has reverted to previous version and I'm quite happy with that for now.

My fear is that Windows will retry the update before I've had the time to do the system checks recommended here. Could that happen and if so how can I stop it. If I disable updates will Windows re-enable it when it wants to???

Updates & Security, Advanced Options, and choose to Defer Feature updates, that will keep it at the version you have now, but eventually you`ll have to upgrade.

I`m staying with the Anniversary Update for as long as possible *Smile

  10. Ah heck. I see you're on pro. I'm on home and that option is not available as far as I can see.

    Thanks.

  12. What exactly is the Creator Update and why do I need it? I've read several threads about problems caused after a Creator Update was installed. Last night I got notification that a new update was downloaded and ready to go, but that I had the option to put it off since it takes a while to install. I opted to put it off for a week.

Also, is Macrium Reflect a good choice for imaging? I'm just setting up this computer and really don't want to have to do it all over again.

    @rosawoodsii,

Creator's Update is just the latest major build of Windows 10. You don't "need" it, but the more you put off the major updates, the further behind your system will become and eventually Microsoft will stop supporting the version of Windows 10 that you stay on (in a couple of years). You say you've read several threads about problems caused by Creator's Update - but remember there are more than 400 million devices running Windows 10. One has to assume that many millions of those devices have automatically updated to Creator's Update with no problems (including the dozen computers on my home network). People don't typically post on forums just to say they have no problems.

Macrium Reflect is probably the BEST choice for imaging. Remember, though, the backup image is only as good as your ability to restore it, so make sure to create a rescue drive for Macrium Reflect and that your computer will boot from it.

As regards features, there's probably nothing you need. Control of Windows updates is a bit better, worse in one way; one useful feature is night-time dimming (although there are free programs that do that, and several have reported problems with it). Additions focus on VR and 3D.

Best bet is to act defensively- anticipate the worst and prepare for it, and hopefully it won't happen. But if it does, hopefully you have a relatively painless recovery.

So if you are using the Anniversary build currently (14393) - the one before the Creator's build (15063) - then create a full Windows disk image (Macrium options Backup, Backup Windows e.g.) at your earliest convenience- don't think 'Oh, I'll just install a few more programs then create an image' - and make sure you update the image before upgrading.

    To see your version number:
    Windows key + R, winver

Normally routine updates are trivial, although a few particular ones have caused problems for a number- e.g. in the month or so following the Anniversary Upgrade last year.
