Hi there! I've still got to get out for a suitable stick, but in the meantime have come across Fresh Start Windows 10 You did not mention it, and, not knowing its workings, am curious why?

You could use that as well if you like. It's just that a clean install usually always gives the best results.

I use my local administrator account, so why am I getting this error?

Thanks; I understand. Is there that much difference in time taken between effecting a refresh and a clean install?

They both take about the same amount of time to perform, but there will be more to do (ex: drivers, settings, etc...) with a clean install afterwards.

Th deed is done! The administrator account has been created with the outlook.com address, but I am struggling to create a local account (with or without privileges). I thought I had created one with name and p/word, but nothing is to be seen,

Hello, chipwood. If you did a Fresh Start or Clean Install, you will need to create and add your local accounts again. For adding a local account, this tutorial, option #:

I use my local administrator account, so why am I getting this error?

I actuallu worked on it before seeing your response. What situation is now:
These are the accounts seen on logging into computer:
Administrator
Local
Administrator
no password

GHC80
**@outlook.com
Administrator
access password #1

Gordon E
Local Account
access password #2

In C:\ users are:
Administrator
Default
Gordon E
Public, and lastly
Gordon E.DESKTOP-CGSLCFV
This account I do not understand its purpose. I see that the 7 character extension is different from that pre clean install.
From the above does all seem as it should be, please?
Thanks for you continued help. Winodws 10 seems good at tying me in knots!

chipwood,

It looks like you successfully created the local account "Gordon E".

While signed in to the "Gordon E" account, you can type echo %UserProfile% in a command prompt and press Enter to see which user profile folder it opens to know which one is being used for this account.

IIt's Code: Gordon E.DESKTOP-CGSLCFV
. I'm curious why you mentioned the tip.
Incidentally my old Inspiron 560 showed up too after the clean install with a different extension. It seems a mystery how that could be.

Overnight the files and folders that were on Gordon E Desktop , Documents etc have moved to ghc80 account. I want to work from Gordon E, Can I get my files and folders back where I want them without risk of this recurring?

I mentioned it to confirm which user profile is actually being used by the account to make sure it didn't get deleted.

Before doing this below, do the same above for the "GHC80" account to verify which user profile folder it's using.

If the original "Gordon E" profile folder isn't corrupted or used by "GHC80", you could try using the method below to switch them. At step 8, change the ProfileImagePath value to be the "C:\Users\Gordon E" path. Skip steps 10-13 since you already have the "Gordon E" folder.

*Arrow Change Name of User Profile Folder in Windows 10 Windows 10 User Accounts Tutorials

If it fails to work, then change the ProfileImagePath value back to "C:\Users\Gordon E.DESKTOP-CGSLCFV".

I use my local administrator account, so why am I getting this error?

Result from GHC80 Code: C:\Windows\system32>echo %UserProfile%C:\Users\Gordon EC:\Windows\system32>
That explains that then. The "GHC80" account is using the "C:\Users\Gordon E" profile folder.

You DO NOT want to change the user profile folder as posted above.

How the dickens then do I get all my stuff in to Gordon E, or if more suitable Gordon E Desktop-xxx? It's inconvenient having it all in GHC80. Do I, and can Idelete GHC80 without losing files?
