Windows 10: Icons missing in start menu following Creators update.

I've got missing start menu icons following the Creators Update, coming and going on boot ups. Anyone else?

Since Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (1709) - Many app shortcuts are messed up in the Start Menu

I installed the Fall creators update today (more or less freedomly ) and the same sh*t occured to me. Every fking shortcut in the start menu is duplicated with a (1) at the end and a lot of shortcuts are missing the Icon.

After Fall Creators Update, all icons of UWP apps are gone, replaced by a blank icon (white sheet of paper).

This happens on:

- File explorer;

- Taskbar;

- Desktop;

- Search (in Start);

Interestingly, it doesn't happens on Start menu itself, all icons are there.

A Microsoft support guy even remotely accessed my computer, trying to repair but he was unsuccessful. He said MS was aware of the problem and I would need to wait for an update.

But this was many weeks ago... no fix for missing icons yet?? Or am I missing something?

Run administrative command prompt: Sfc /scannow

In control panel click on troubleshooting then view all then run the windows store apps troubleshooter. Or use the first link in the Microsoft easy fix for the Microsoft store.

If the above have not fixed it try rebuilding the Iconcache.db

Sfc /scannow passed and also seemed to restore the icons. The missing icons I think were mainly 3rd party apps which were mainly yellow folder icons...

Oh, and what happened to command prompt being in the start menu right click menu?

When you used a different user was the start menu the same or different?

Or you could just change it back to being Command Prompt. It's always been an option to choose between showing Command Prompt or Powershell for a right-click on Start. The only thing that changed with Creators was the default choice.

@zbook What do you mean by was the start menu the same or different?

 

If you suspect a corrupt user profile is the cause of Start menu 'oddities' then the standard test is to log in as another user and see if the Start menu is OK for them.

Command Prompt/PowerShell isn't an 'oddity', it's a 'feature'. Actually, the choice of PowerShell or Command Prompt on Start is a per-user setting so in this case different users could legitimately see different results, depending on their choices.

 

I've seen this issue a few times also. Some times they are blank (no folder icon), sometimes they look like they have multiple icons. It comes and goes and not just on reboot. Expand a menu item will show the folder icon, collapse it and it disappears.

Yes sure, I see. Right now both my standard and admin account start menus seem OK. Possibly the file system scan corrected something. I will keep an eye on it and test with another user account if need be.

 

On one occasion the icons were blank and on another they were using an image from my pictures folder as the icon...

 

So this issue seems to persist on reboots. I'll try the other mentioned fixes first before creating a new user account.

Edit: How do I make the new user account have access to everything I had with this account? Personal files etc. The standard account I'm using right now was originally the administrator account converted to a standard user account.

Essentially dealing with user data files (Videos, photos, documents)... is relatively easy.
Replicating the startups and other settings may not be.

 

At this stage I don't know 100% that the user profile is corrupted... I don't really work from the admin or any other user account to know if they are affected. The missing icons doesn't necessarily happen right on boot, it seems to occur randomly.

If it is a corrupted user profile, what part of the profile/files would be corrupted? Exactly what file/folders are usually part of a user profile? Mainly Videos, photos, documents, download, appdata folders?

Is it possible to create a new user account/profile and have all of the existing file/folders linked to it from the previous user? E.g. Videos, photos, documents, download, appdata folders?

I can't see the point in backing up the above folders when they're already on the same drive... Not really sure where to head with this.
