  1. IDE ATA/ATAPI controller not starting

    Hello-
I've been very frustrated with my upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 on my Desktop computer.

I've upgraded two computers at my house to Windows 10. Both have had much different results. My Windows 8 laptop upgraded easily and operates nicely with the update. My much faster Desktop went from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and is now super laggy and has been a horrible update. I upgraded both with existing (meaning I didn't do a full wipe and install...but the laptop had nearly nothing on it to begin with).
So I have been trying to figure out what my real problems were with the update on the Desktop (formerly Windows 7 and had tons of old apps, files, etc). I finally noticed that the IDE ATA/ATAPI controller ( which is an Intel (R) 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller - 10C02) is not starting up. I figured it was an old driver, but it says it has the most recent driver when I tried that. I then tried to uninstall the driver and do a restart, but it still says it is not starting (I believe it installed the same driver again).

I then posted on the Windows 10 reddit and got the advice to use an Intel utility for the drivers, but that also recognized that the driver was up to date and did nothing. Last night I backed up all my files and did a wipe and fresh install of Windows 10...but still the Intel (R) 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller - 10C02) is not starting up and has a yellow exclamation point through it in Device Manager

So now I am not experienced enough to know what I should do next. I am figuring that this is just not as compatible with Windows 10 like it was identified and that I should go back to Windows 7...but I am past my 30 days at this point.
Anyone got any advice for me?

    :)

Windows 10 not detecting DVD-ROM drive, showing error code 45

That was a typo on my part (now corrected) - it should be IDE ATA/ATAPI

In the Device Manager double-click "Standard SATA AHCI Controller" > Details, then choose "Hardware Ids" from the drop-down menu under "Property".

    What is listed under "Value"?

    Welcome!

What model PC or motherboard are you using? I would go to the motherboard web site and download the AHCI drivers from there.

  6. I think I know what it is, but will wait until I get home to be sure. If I go to their site and there is no Windows 10 drivers for it, do I have any other options other than going back to Windows 7?

Intel Chipset drivers will not provide the AHCI drivers. That is why I asked what motherboard or computer he is using.

My Motherboard is a ASUSTek Computer INC., Sabertooth P67
Chipset: Intel - Sandy Bridge Rev. 09
    Southbridge: Intel - P67 Rev. B3

    BIOS
    Brand: American Megatrends Inc.
    Version: 1502
    Date: 03/02/11

Please be aware that if you suggest I Flash the BIOS or something, please push me in a direction to learn about that as I have never done anything like that.

Thanks for any more help you can give.

No? The only motherboard drivers I recall needing on recent Intel boards were the chipset and the MEI (management engine interface) ones.

I have never needed the RST drivers for regular operation. I even tried installing them on my latest system. No go. My guess is that may be because I'm using NVME drivers for my PCI-E SSD.

I see that there is a BIOS update available for the board. I'm not sure that I'd recommend it; I did BIOS updates regularly for years and never had a failure - until I tried it on one of the early UEFI boards. However, this board has a BIOS recovery feature, which could save things if the flash goes wrong. I suggest using the EZFlash method; it's simpler than creating a bootable DOS device, and I trust it more than I would updating from within Windows.

  11. Those 8.1 drivers seemed to help. I am finally able to multitask when on my computer again. Thank you very much.

    IDE ATA/ATAPI controller not starting

    a follow-up:

My Asrock X99 board has 10 SATA3 connectors. RAID is supported on 6 of them. I had my two SATA drives on the non-RAID connectors. After I moved them to the ones that support RAID, I was able to install the Intel RST drivers. (Which replaced Microsoft drivers.)

I don't see a world of difference in drive performance, but thanks for the information.
