    Hi there!

I've seen all the threads involving a replaced motherboard and none of them have addressed the possible issue in replacing a motherboard on a homemade system. All I ask is that if I built my system using a brand new motherboard from one place, GPU from another, the CPU from yet another place, memory, PCU, case, etc and slapped it all together, NOT built by a third party, NOT a part of any organization such as HP, Compaqsame people, I heard, Gateway, Alienware, etc, but made by me and then got the Windows 8 preview build when it came out, later purchasing it for the discounted price that was offered to those who had the Preview build, can I replace the motherboard and still have a valid Windows 10 key?

When I go to login to my account after reinstalling Windows, it requires an email and a password, from there I'm logged in and certified with a Windows 10 Pro DIGITAL LICENSE.

Will that be compromised upon swapping out motherboards?

    Thank you!

    M

    :)

Can't activate windows 10 after changing motherboard

    Hello,

I can't activate my windows 10 license after changing my motherboard.

The license I have is a Windows 7 Pro license, that got changed into a Windows 10 license, when the upgrade was free.

Steps I took previous to the motherboard change:

    - I linked my Microsoft account with my device, so that my license is registered under my account (it showed up with my mail in the accounts section)

Now, with the new motherboard built in, I can't activate Windows 10 anymore.

I tried the support steps listed by the Microsoft helper (Activation -> Click Troubleshoot), but that did not work.

In the Activitation settings I get the error code: 0xC004F213

Does anybody know a solution for this, as I haven't found one so far.

  3. Activate Windows 10 after motherboard change

    Hi,

    Thanks for the reply.

I built the PC myself and it is\was a retail Windows 8 Pro license upgraded to 10.

The guide listed that I should be able to transfer the license, and following the steps given when selecting "I recently changed hardware" in the activation process it does not list my previous device to select from.

My Microsoft account is logged in on both my old and new motherboard, and my old motherboard is unable to boot at all to deactivate or retrieve any keys.

If my license is indeed available for transfer, how can I proceed from here?

    Thanks.

If I built my system from scratch and want to change the motherboard, will my windows 10...

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK
