Windows 10: I'm done with Win10

Discus and support I'm done with Win10 in Windows 10 Support to solve the problem; That's definitely a +1. I would like to ask: is it worth keeping your warranty, can you get at least some of your money back? --- What good is a... Discussion in 'Windows 10 Support' started by slicendice, Apr 4, 2018.

Regarding the warranty,-I've been asking myself the same question.
I'll let the store get one chance to check for hardware issues, and if they do not find anything the computer will still act up, since I suspect they won't dig too deep softwarewise. The tech won't spend hours on end staring at my computer while the clock ticks. Then I'll contact HP.

Years ago I buildt fully working desktops from parts I found in computer companies' thrash-containers or bought from second-hand stores.
Buildt several of them, and they worked for years,-never a problem.

Yes, we need "sisu" to get things going, the "iso puukko" to slice and dice the device if we can't get it working, and then "Koskenkorva" to flush all the frustration away and forget what we just did and finally some "Sisu" (the candy) to get our breath fresh so we don't smell bad afterwards. *chuckle

    Hi folks
Apart from the "Appy" look which tries to make W10 look more and more like it's running from a 6 inch mobile phone screen it seems fast, safe and solid - probably best version yet. I've had zero problems testing new "unofficial" version 1803 - even networking isn't broken --must be a ist for windows.

I do wish modern programs weren't though designed without menu bars and made to look as if they were meant to run on small mobile phone screens -- I have several large monitors where I run concurrent windowed applications - always moving bits of text / drawings / spreadsheet data etc between screens and programs and this would be really difficult if they all had to run in full screen mode. I've also got rid of most of the silly tiles on the start screen too.

I can't see myself for example ever being converted to use Edge -- IE11. Firefox and Chrome all work just fine for me.

    Cheers

I wish people would stop saying that desktop/laptop W10 looks like phones. It's nothing like Android or IOS and it's Windows phone that looks like its on a desktop/laptop computer, although it's more like chicken and egg situation.
I purposely took my Lumia 640 and upgraded to W10 Mobile so I can have a familiar interface and as a bonus it's working together with desktop fine unlike Android phones. Speaking of Android, it's probably most confusing environment and dependence on Google is definitely annoying. I wish MS would continue supporting phone OS so more APPs for it are also developed.

  9. If Android is confusing for you, then Windows mobile is confusing for me. I think it all depends on what we get used to. *Smile

Just like Android depends on Google services, Windows phone depend on Microsoft services and IOS depends on Apple services. I see no difference there. *Smile

I can't stand Apple mobile devices, while Windows mobile is very inconvenient for my mobile usage. Android is what I use and will keep using since it makes most sense to me. Someone else would prefer something else. All devices are great though.

Why does Windows Apps look so mobile appy? It's because today almost everything is written from same code base and mostly made mobile friendly first. Most apps are scalable so they support any screen sizes, any resolutions and touch. This makes Apps look and feel like you are on a mobile even when on a desktop computer.

So, some love this change and some hate it. I just ignore it and try to find the best tool for the job. But this is what the UWP platform is all about. *Smile

    Hi there
    @slicendice

What you say has a bit of "convoluted Logic" about it -- while it's true that to develop software from a "unified code base" might seem the way forward it's how the USERS want to interact with their systems that count.

I don't know of too many tablet or phone users who need to cut and paste data from several running concurrent apps -- on a PC running Engineering / scientific / Banking / Stock trading software or a variety of other things you absolutely need a "Classical Interface".

Also you must have seen how rediculous it is when some of the Broadcasting authorities show Portrait scaled Mobile phone footage on News programs etc -- this looks totally BONKERS on large screens -- just turn the damn thing around onto Landscape mode and give us a sort of full screen picture. -- what's the point of > 50 inch screens if all we see are what looks like a typical mobile phone image with huge black bars down the side and a thin sliver of video on a giant screen !!!!.

I have no trouble with an appy look on a say a Samsung Android phone -- I HATE it though on desktop computers -- why would I get into say a Ferrari and expect it to work like a Bicycle (although I like Push Bikes too) -- use the right tool for the job - a one size fits all never works in practice in spite of the supposed advantages.

    Cheers

I hear you! Some developers has taken all this to the extreme and it's really terrible.

Not everything is suited for an appy look. But the issue today is in the app design itself. If you run an app on a 5" phone screen with only touch capabilities, then the UI must be fitted accordingly, but lets say you run exactly the same app on a 32" QHD display using mouse, there must be a completely different set of features easily available and represented in a convenient way, without forcing the user to look at elephant sized icons and all menu options hidden behind a hamburger-button.

I don't think all developers or their designers has thought this thing quite through. The key word here is "SCALABILITY" which many apps take advantage of very poorly. Small screen with decent resolution -> hide most stuff and completely disable some features. Big Screen with high resolution -> a lot of real estate -> use scalability to keep everything at readable sizes but cram all features available in the app as close to the main view as possible. Meaning show as much info as possible in the workspace and DO use menus or equivalents for quick access.

For Stock/FOREX trading I don't need a "classical interface". 99.99% of the time all I do is click on a few important buttons, adjust some parameters and do a few swipe gesture on charts. For trading, an app is perfectly fine on both mobile and PC. Only the real estate is a lot bigger on a PC which makes it easier to get the big picture by having multiple charts open side by side. I don't need any menus at all for making money in trading. *Smile

    Hi there

For actual Trading -- I agree but I'm thinking of things like "Technical Analysis" where you want to run some "What If" scenarios or spread sheets with pivot tables etc. In any case you still need to run things concurrently and using keyboard + mouse combos on big screens is still the most sensible way --even if you had touch screens would you want greasy fingers sliding all over a 1500 USD screen !!!!

    cheers
